Notables

I am trying to diversify the notable alumni list which was mostly athletes, and have added several. Some had Wikipedia entries. Others did not, but I provided references for their fame and proof of attendance of CHS as required by the notable alumni standards. However, another content creator deleted those individuals because they do not have an entry in Wikipedia. As I understand it, this challenge kicks them to this Talk Page for approval. So, under consideration:

• Reggie Barnes (Reginal Barnes Jr.) - former professional skateboarder, once ranked in top five worldwide for freestyle. Was a member of the original Pepsi skateboarding team. Film stunt performer including being the skateboard stunt double for Donatello in the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' movie. Founder and owner of Eastern Skateboard Supply which is the largest skateboard wholesale supplier in the world.

• Anthony Reynolds - film and television actor, writer producer. According to IMBd, his biggest roles were in the films 'I Tonya' and 'Trial by Fire'.

Any questions? Thoughts? Do these two qualify for the notable alumni list or not?Rublamb (talk) 15:20, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

As a Wikipedia article is not required for notable alumni, I am requesting that anyone reviewing this information judge using the other option which is whether I have documented notability and provided proof of attending Cary High School. Thanks. Rublamb (talk) 03:22, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

C.Fred Thanks for joining the discussion. Can you be more specific as to why you don't think these guys meet the standard for a notable alumni? It seems like anyone else from CHS that has been a professional athlete in baseball, football, basketball or soccer in on the list. Why wouldn't a professional skateboarder be worthy, especially one who was top 5 in the world? There are plenty more sources if needed on him, including results of professional competitions. With the actor, I guess I could see saying his roles are too small, but his IMBd listing is significant. Getting a listing there is notable as those entries also go through review. BYW, I don't know these guys, but do know others on the list who I have added with success. As I said before, just trying to diversify the list to show that not everyone who is successful from CHS is a traditional athelete.Rublamb (talk) 21:50, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

@Rublamb: The thing to look at is the general notability guideline. For Barnes, two local publications arn't indicators of widespread coverage. On the other hand, a two-page article in Sports Illustrated would be. If he was ranked top five, there should be national-level coverage. For Reynolds...with as many credits as are listed on IMDB, there should be coverage of him in other sources. —C.Fred (talk) 22:07, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

@C.Fred: Thanks for your response. I now get a better sense of what you are looking for--can you give more advice? In deletionpedia, I found an entry for Anthony Reynolds. Looks like it was purged in 2016 because it was sourced from IMDb, but needed secondary sources and maybe bigger roles. He has had bigger roles since, but still not the main lead. Is that worth working on? For Reggie Barnes, the sources are a bit underground as this is the first decade of pro skateboarding, but I finally found digitized skating magazines and some stuff from the NSA that show rankings and info on the Reggie Barnes skateboards that Walker issued back in the date. At this point, this looks like enough for an entry which I will eventually work on. Rublamb (talk) 01:52, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Edits and Fact Checking

I edited this article and fixed the following:

• Jerry Winteron has not won over 20 state titles, he currently has 19.
• Cary did not win the 1914 mens baseball championship, that was Sylvan according to NCHSAA records and at that time there was only one classification.
• The wrestling championship for 1977 was not a 4A championship, at that point there was only one state tournament for wrestling, it was considered an 'open' state tournament since it included all divisions.
• The football championship Cary won in 1955 was not class 4A, it was Class A. At that time there were only three classifications, A, AA, and AAA. In 1955, Cary was classified as A. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.247.211.180 (talk) 02:55, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Just edited something else, Cary was listed as having won the 1995 Men's Basketball title. It's true they won the championship game however they were later striped of the title after it was discovered they used an ineligible player. Also, the title's in Men's Basketball Cary won in 1939 and 1954 were NOT 4A. That was not how the classifications were denoted at that time.

Paul Brown

“There is controversy surrounding Chief Paul Brown regarding his constantly being reported by cadets for inappropriate behavior including making female cadets very uncomfortable (staring, helping them "stretch" and the like), having little to no control over his anger and his seeming to know nothing about the subject he teaches in his Navel Science 1 class.” Call me crazy, but I think this kind of statement probably needs a verifiable source cited.
