Talk:Catholic Church in Israel
General
editThis page illustrates the problematic of current English Wikipedia terminology for the Catholic Church.
The article speaks of "Roman Catholicism", as if that were the Church's official name, but the faithful indicated in the articles are members of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church and the Maronite Church. These are two Eastern Catholic churches with their own hierarchies, headed by patriarchs; they are in full communion with the Pope of Rome, but to call them Roman Catholics is an abuse of terminology. - Have added extensive information and statistics, but there is still room for improvement. I relied heavily on the official websites and publications of the Catholic Churches in the Holy Land (e.g., Latin Patriarchate, et al.). Also corrected any misuse of "Roman Catholic" as pointed out above. Protoclete (talk) 15:43, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
Merger proposal
editI propose that Roman Catholicism in the Palestinian territories be merged into this page; it can be relabeled as Catholic Church in Israel and Palestine, or, Catholic Church in Israel and Palestinian Territories. This page is more extensive, Roman Catholicism in the Palestinian territories is a stub. Further, the Catholic Church does not make a distinction in terms of its own jurisdiction and organization - the same structures and bishops serve Israel and Palestine/Palestinian Territory. Palestine is a country being ethnically cleansed by Israel, therefore your merger proposal is unhelpful — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.11.147.67 (talk) 17:23, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose - two distinct topics.GreyShark (dibra) 14:24, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
- Support – I would support the proposal of merging the two articles, the stub with this more substantial article. Jzsj (talk) 03:03, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Comment: Does Catholic Church in Korea indicate a similar question? PPEMES (talk) 14:34, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- I don't see the two situations as being so similar that this one should not be handled separately, but others may disagree. Jzsj (talk) 14:44, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Well, isn't your position in line with consequential priority to ecclesiastical, jurisdictional unity for both? PPEMES (talk) 14:47, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Not entirely. There are other questions like the current situation of statehood. I don't think we should call Palestine "Israel" in spite of the situation on the ground. It's mainly the renaming of the article that I'm advocating, which would necessitate the merger. Jzsj (talk) 15:23, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
