Photograph
editI found this image of a supposed photograph of Cathay Williams, but I can't find a source:(https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/nr9wc6/rare_picture_of_a_black_female_union_soldier_1862/)
I'd like to upload it and add it to her info box but I need to find a source and be sure it's 100% her.
Any help would be appreciated. Benjamin.P.L (talk) 9:11, September 26, 2021 (UTC)
- more info was in the state mental hospital from 1897-1911, when she died and was buried as William Cather in a pauper's grave in Rosemont Cemetery in Pueblo. : — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.153.148.230 (talk) 05:33, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
Condition at discharge: discovered?
editSo here's something that bothers me. I have seen in books references to William Cathay/Cathay Williams being discovered by a surgeon, hence being discharged from the Army. They cite nothing, or they cite Charlotte K. Mock's book "Bridges". I have not read Bridges, so I do not know where she got her information, but others have cited her book.
DeAnne Blanton wrote an article titled "Cathay Williams: Black Woman Soldier, 1866-1868" in Minerva: Quarterly Report of Women and the Military 10 (Fall/Winter 1992]: 1-12, that states that Cathay Williams was not discovered, or else that would have been mentioned in the discharge papers. Or if she was, nobody officially noted it in any government records. Blanton also reviewed other military records and found none that referred to Cathay Williams being discovered. So what is the source of that claim that she was discovered? The Wikipedia article does not source its claim.
However, DeAnne Blanton made a credible claim that Cathay Williams was not discovered. So should the Wikipedia article be amended to note that? If she was not discovered, it feels like Wikipedia is pushing bad history by claiming she was.
Removed Civil War section
editI removed the Civil War section because it claimed that Cathay Williams may have been the same person as Finis Cathay in the 32nd Missouri Infantry Regiment. However, this appears to be an all-white unit, as units with African Americans were not founded until later, and were always designated as "colored" in their names. For info on the history of Black units in the Civil War in Missouri, see Missouri's Secretary of State Digital Heritage website[1]. Tanyarothphd (talk) 14:07, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
