2016 champions

edit

Which club were awarded the 2016 Cavan Senior Hurling Championship title?

Mullahoran won the 2016 final. That is clear from the sources. (Irish Independent, Cavan GAA Twitter, etc).

However, it is significantly less clear if that meant Mullahoran were awarded the title.

The 2016 Cavan Senior Hurling Championship article states that the title was awarded to Cootehill. Owing to a player eligibility issue. While the reason and details of this decision (to award Cootehill the title over Mullahoran) is seemingly not documented anywhere, that Cootehill were considered the 2016 holders is supported by this Irish Independent article on the 2017 final. Which states that Cootehill were the defending champions and that the 2017 competition was Mullahoran's "first title in four years". Ditto this Hoganstand.com article on the 2017 describes Cootehill as the (2016) "holders".

Unless someone else can offer other thoughts, and perhaps a definitive source one way or the other, I'm not sure what to suggest. Certainly there are some accuracy issues here. Not least hampered by the fact that nobody seems to give a toss about hurling in Cavan. To the extent that they don't seem to keep a record of the winners of the senior club hurling competitions. Which, frankly, makes me wonder why we have these articles. As, if the competition is so "unimportant" (even to those who participate in it and run it) I wonder how it meets this project's notability criteria....

Anyway, if someone can find a definitive source (one way or the other) to clear up this issue, that'd be great. Guliolopez (talk) 10:13, 16 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's been a while, and I haven't heard any other thoughts on the above, so I've updated the article to reflect the best available sources. I've retained the "disputed" tag. As even the best available sources are not definitive. But at least, now, the Cavan Senior Hurling Championship and 2016 Cavan Senior Hurling Championship articles no longer overtly conflict with one another. As before, it is disappointing that the Cavan GAA county board affords such a lack of importance to the sport and the competition that they don't even record the basic information on which club won the senior club hurling competition. (Disappointing both in general terms. And relative to the fact that Wikipedia guidelines preclude it being a primary source. Such that, if Wikipedia is the ONLY PLACE that this stuff is recorded, then it probably shouldn't be here at all...) Guliolopez (talk) 15:33, 11 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
