IPA and pronunciation respelling

edit

If User:Snappy or another user would like to insert the International Phonetic Alphabet pronunciation of bainisteoir and bainisteoirí that would be an excellent improvement. I can read IPA but don't feel qualified using it to represent the nuanced pronunciations of the Irish language. As indicated elsewhere, I think its helpful to also include the pronunciation respelling "bwin-ish-TYOH-ir" as Wikipedia:Manual of Style (pronunciation) absolutely does allow this, we're able to cite this particular respelling to a language instructional website, and pronunciation respellings are popular with more casual Wikipedia readers who may be daunted by IPA. User:Snappy expressed concerns that the "bwin-ish-TYOH-ir" pronunciation respelling doesn't represent all three main dialects of Irish. This concern wouldn't prevent us from presenting an IPA pronunciation nor should it prevent us from presenting a pronunciation respelling. Certainly we can add some qualifying text along the lines of "pronounced 'bwin-ish-TYOH-ir' according to one pronunciation respelling" if it seems useful. What doesn't seem useful is editing out the pronunciation respelling. --Boston (talk) 02:21, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Manual of Style (pronunciation) does NOT allow for "bwin-ish-TYOH-ir" as it is not a pronunciation respelling. Secondly, this is a hiberno-centric pronunciation in one Irish language dialect. I have asked an experienced editor to provide the IPA, so the situation will soon be rectified and "bwin-ish-TYOH-ir" can be removed. Please see many other articles with Irish language words in the title as an example of Wikipedia pronunciation guidelines in action. See Taoiseach, Ceann Comhairle, Tánaiste etc. Snappy (talk) 04:22, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by "hiberno-centric". How can the pronunciation of an Irish word be anything but hiberno-centric? Also, since Irish has no single standard pronunciation, it's inevitable that dialect pronunications are given. "bwin-ish-TYOH-ir" would seem to mean [bˠɪnʲəʃˈtʲoːɾʲ], which to judge from the stress must be a Munster pronunciation. I can't find this word in any of the books I've looked in so far, but my best guess for Connacht is [ˈbˠanʲəʃtʲoːɾʲ] and for Ulster, [ˈbˠanʲəʃtʲaɾʲ]. But the article should say that [bainisteoir] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) is simply the Irish word for manager (in general), rather than the word for manager of Gaelic games teams in particular. —Angr 05:58, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
What I meant by hiberno centric is that "bwin-ish-TYOH-ir" will not be pronounced the same by an English speaker from the US or Britain or Australia or elsewhere. Hence my request for IPA, for a standard pronunciation. Thanks, Snappy (talk) 06:27, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
The problem isn't whether the respelling follows the MOS--there's no reason it needs to--but that respellings aren't useful for foreign words, since they can only give English equivalents. Unless "bwin-ish-TYOH-ir" is supposed to be the English pronunciation? kwami (talk) 06:00, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've added [bˠɪnʲəʃˈtʲoːɾʲ] as the IPA pronunciation. Snappy (talk) 00:42, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
