• Mi'irabawi Zone → Western Zone, Tigray

– Per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:RECOGNIZE. All of these zone names are known more than their Tigrinya names. For example "Central Zone Tigray" shows 9,090 results on Google (or 52,000 results for "Central Tigray"), vs 2,900 results for "Maekelay Zone". Ue3lman (talk) 05:57, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

• I have no opinion on whether the Tigrayan version or English version is more prominent than the other.
  Pro: The proposed names will be easier to remember than the unpronounceable ones currently in use.
  Con: If you look at List of zones of Ethiopia you'll find that none of the zone articles have a region as part of their title, facilitating being able to use it without having to make a special wikilink like you will have to with these proposed names. Example: [[Central Zone, Tigray|Central Zone]].
  Con#2: Hundreds of articles to change over (redirects notwithstanding).

@Platonk: Regarding con1, two zones do have the region name in the title, that is North Shewa Zone (Amhara) and North Shewa Zone (Oromia). Would it be better if Tigray was in parentheses? Regrading con2, I'm pretty sure there's a bot for that. Ue3lman (talk) 21:37, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

• Support The current ones are only unpronounceable to non-Tigrinya speakers (like me), which is not necessarily a problem in itself - quite a few article titles are in the original language because they're well recognised in English usage. I haven't checked if it's true that the Tigrinya names really just mean the geographical directions, but nobody has disputed this, and these claims have remained in place in the respective articles for a long time, so they're credible. Assuming that this is true, the use of the English-language names should satisfy both Tigrinya and non-Tigrinya speakers, since Tigrinya speakers who are reading the English-language Wikipedia should not have difficulty switching between the two language names. An advantage of the English-language names would be that non-Tigrinya speakers adding material based on a source that refers to the "western" or "southern" zone will not have to look up the navigation template to work out what to link to. It would also make tidying up material generally easier for non-Tigrinya speakers. (Clarification: I don't know how far Tigrinya is from other Ethiopic languages, whose speakers may find the meanings of Maekelay and Misraqawi to be obvious with minor spelling variations. So "(non-)Tigrinya speakers" can probably be replaced by "(non-)Ethiopic speakers".) Boud (talk) 22:16, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

• Half-support Though I haven't found ambivalent result in Google and there is mixture of result by English "Central" or native "Maekelay", it is possible to use English source for example like this map per WP:COMMONNAME. The Supermind (talk) 07:50, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
