Charlemagne
editCharlemagne died in AD 814. The Vikings invaded France beginning in AD 820. Therefore it was built in anticipation of possible future invasions, not ones that were ongoing at the time of the build. The paragraph in French translates as : 'It was Charlemagne who had a fortress built on the rock of Saint-Lô to defend the steps of his kingdom against invaders, which was not going to prevent the Vikings from taking it over.'
