Indian war plaque

edit

Agriculture, the "Indian wars" link seems to be the catchall page for the series of conflicts between the Europeans an native Americans, with several conflicts or battles that have not yet merited separate web pages mentioned. So perhaps for the time being it should be where the plaque link goes? Indian conflicts specific to the midwest I'm sure merit their own page, but perhaps the link should be called something more informative than "Indian war", which could at first glance refer to anything from India-Pakistan conflicts, the Indian struggle for independence from the British, or numerous other conflicts between Europeans and natives. It would probably need to be disambiguated at a later time. How do historians refer to the specific conflict mentioned on the plaque? Fawcett5 14:50, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I'd suggest changing the link then to Indian Wars|Indian War then, I have no objection to that. I agree there probably needs to be a specific page and disambiguation links. As to how historians refer to it, I'm unsure. Agriculture 15:05, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Eponymous

edit

By the way, what was the stylistic objection to "eponymous"? Fawcett5 14:52, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Entries in wikipedia are supposed to "encyclopedic", a bad term to be sure as it's vague, but if you read the style guide in full one of the suggestions is to avoid words which are not in used in common conversation. The idea here is to make the entries more accessible. You and I know what eponymous means, but most of the world hasn't graduated from secondary school and does not encounter nor use eponymous in daily life. Sure they could look it up, and might become better educated in the process. That is however not the point of Wikipedia. It's about accessible encyclopedic information. Park sizes erroneous

edit

I'm not sure where the original source for this information was, but Hessel Park is definitely not a "minor" park by the primary author's definition. It's actually twice as large (acreage-wise) than West Side Park. Centennial is only 73 acres, unless the author is adding in some other area that's not officially considered as part of that park.

Some suggestions for additions which are surprising omissions: Kaufman Lake, the SW Champaign walking/cycling trails, and the Virginia Theater, which is owned by the Park District.

Formatting

edit

The text is "wrapped" around the small square Table of Context box in order to avoid ugly gaping holes of blank space. Try alternatives yourself and see the effect . There is currently an editor going about making a mess of carefully formatted articles to satisfy some obscure personal agenda. --Wetman 21:36, 30 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
