Position - DE or LB
editClearly there's an ongoing dispute about what to list Chandler Jones' position as.
@Hunterb212 makes the argument that we should go with the position that NFL.com lists for Chandler Jones, which is OLB.
@Calidum cites this official signing post from March 17 by the Raiders as a reason to list Jones as a linebacker.
Instead, I make the argument that NFL.com is often out of date regarding a player's position and they are NOT the supreme authority on a player's position. The team itself can and does dictate what position a player is going to play. In this instance, the Raiders list Chandler Jones as a defensive end, NOT a linebacker. The initial signing report calls him out as a linebacker because that's what his position was with the Cardinals, not the position they intended to play him at. When a team that actively updates their roster on their website lists a newly signed free agent as a different position than NFL.com, we listen to what the team has stated regarding a player's position.
Examples of NFL.com being out of date and not reflecting positional changes;
- Jordan Matthews is now a tight end according to the 49ers' roster, not a wide receiver as listed by NFL.com
- Matt Cole is now a cornerback according to the Seahawks' roster, not a wide receiver as listed by NFL.com
Raiders current roster which lists him as a defensive end
March 17, Raiders post a video titled "Watch: Chandler Jones arrives in Vegas, signs his contract and tours HQ", with a description of "Watch as defensive end Chandler Jones arrives at Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center to tour the facility and gives a special message to Raider Nation."
March 17, Raiders post a video titled "Chandler Jones: 'I'm excited for them to see me in Silver and Black sacking quarterbacks'", with a description of "Defensive end Chandler Jones discusses his reasons for joining the Silver and Black, his relationship with Maxx Crosby, his leadership style and more."
March 18, Raiders post a video titled "Highlights: Pro Bowl DE Chandler Jones"
In summation, NFL.com does not always reflect the actual position of a player. In situations where there are different positions listed, we should be deferring to what the team is listing a player as. In this case, the Raiders are referring to Jones as a defensive end. I ask that someone other than me make this change, as I do not wish to violate the 3 revert-rule and be considered as edit warring. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:02, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- Pinging @Hunterb212 again regarding this since they keep making changes that others add relevant sources for. Please participate in the discussion, as discussion is a key part of coming to a consensus instead of just edit warring. Hey man im josh (talk) 17:10, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Hunterb212: it's very bad form to not participate in talk page discussions revolving content that you're disputing while still participate in edit wars. I see you've implemented this change finally. Please make an attempt to contribute more collectively moving forward. Hey man im josh (talk) 02:19, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
