General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
  • Cited:
  • Interesting:
QPQ: Done.

Overall:   Waiting on a QPQ. Article has 3600+ characters and it was just over 572 characters until the 26th of December - so it is 5x expanded. Earwigs calls out some direct quotes, but they are not copyright violations, they are properly referenced. The references support the claims. In the claim about being discovered in "11th grade" the actual reference says she was a "junior" in HS when discovered - and it is the same thing, but I think it may make a better hook to say junior? But I am not married to the idea. There are 7 separate claims which are referenced to the "Vulture" reference, so perhaps we should check for references that present more diversity of references. The neutrality is a question. It is flowery and gushing, - like this kid is a rising star and she is going places! I saw a sentences about her "imminent popularity" (I removed it). I saw an ambiguous statement about her song appearing in summer 2020, the reference actually said April 2020, so I changed it to read April 2020. There is no picture but we do not need one. I think it is a more interesting hook to mention she was discovered from a youtube video. I will present an ATL here but I can live with ATL0 also.

ATL1 ...that singer Chappell Roan was a junior in high school when she was discovered on YouTube? Bruxton (talk) 02:26, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ready for DYK. Yes the song is wistful and somber, and then somewhat hopeful. Her voice is very pleasing. Bruxton (talk) 14:53, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Modified ALT1 to T:DYK/P4

I believe there needs to be additional research regarding their birthday/ personal information regarding this individual without tiktok as a referenced source of information disinformation can cause problems to the artist and possibly others without steargarded information in place that is accurate //you might be placing this person in some hot water for something that is not accurate. 72.68.117.233 (talk) 17:13, 4 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Chapppell's Drag Queen Style

edit

Hello, I am new to Wikipedia editing however after reading through this page I think it's important to note Chappell's style of performing and where that stems from which is Drag Race. Rachelscriver (talk) 21:44, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Rachelscriver, to the extent that you can find sources that have discussed Chappell's performing style and have directly linked it to drag, we can definitely include that. Alyo (chat·edits) 00:37, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Queer vs. lesbian

edit

Hey all, have been seeing some commentary on Reddit and other sites about edits citing Chappell self-identifying as a lesbian frequently being reversed. Is this due to inadequate citations or something else? I think if she's using a more accurate label it makes more sense to use that. TariffedSparrow (talk) 01:14, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I also saw that post. I think the best source for "lesbian" would be this TIME interview, at around the 2:40 mark. https://time.com/6836626/chappell-roan-interview-guts-tour-olivia-rodrigo/ Mateussf (talk) 03:47, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
That does seem to be the best source. I added it to her Personal life section, with careful wording. Wikipedia tends to be very cautious when it comes to personal identity--short of the person saying "I am X" explicitly, they often seem to avoid simply saying "This person is X." Unfortunatley, so far I wasn't able to find a source where she clearly, directly, calls herself a lesbian. BlueRoseGardener (talk) 05:27, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am aware that this likely isn't the best source, but right now it is all that's available so I would like to submit it for consideration until we have something better. This is a video from her recent concert in which she explicitly states "I'm a lesbian now". https://x.com/lesbianvillanel/status/1799299769292271886
Again, I am aware we will probably need to wait until there is a better source than a video on Twitter, but those were the words from her mouth directly calling herself a lesbian. Redandsymmetry (talk) 16:21, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Add the following:

She said in an interview that she has been criticized for doing drag as a woman: «I never understood the pushback on why girls can’t do drag. I do drag – it makes me feel good and free, it’s the same feeling that the gay boys feel. To me, it feels like they just don’t like women doing things. It’s just another man trying to tell a woman what to do. I’m a drag queen, whether you like girls doing it or not.»

Chapell Roan “Identifies as Lesbian”

edit

While Chapell Roan certainly dates women, this article claims that she identifies as lesbian…the cited sources do not seem to prove this. The first source is a random twitter user (doesn’t seem completely reliable) and the second is a billboard article which talks about lesbianism, but includes no quotes from Chapell Roan herself stating that she is lesbian. There does not appear to be credible evidence that she is lesbian. I think there is strong evidence to say she “identifies as queer,” and that might be the proper phrase to use. 2601:1C2:1900:8170:6D34:EEBA:8B6B:6375 (talk) 02:51, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Although it's not the best source, MOS:IDENTITY says to "use the term that the person or group uses", and that's what the twitter/x video shows. She has repeatedly made statements identifying as a lesbian, and in this case I think consensus has fallen on not trying to wiki-lawyer her identity. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:31, 30 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I would like to edit or add a contribution to this page. Considering that this page is still fairly new, and updates will be needed, I thought it is important to add information about Chappell Roan's charity work that has been done alongside of her music career.

Roan has helped countless communities and organizations, by donating her proceeds to charities, such as women's rights and LGBTQ+ rights. Examples for these charities and their donations can be found on her website: https://www.iamchappellroan.com/charity/ . On this site is provided with three major women's suffrage and LGBTQ+ rights charities.

Aside from that, Roan has also donated generous amounts of her proceeds to Gaza relief organizations, here; https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/chappell-roan-friendship-bracelets-for-gaza and here as well. This article elaborates a bit more on her other charity donations. https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2023/09/chappell-roan-on-making-pop-music-and-giving-back UncleMooseMan42.o (talk) 19:03, 19 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Just want to say that the first two sources here are a little too close to the artist to be acceptable for something like this, I think. The Vanity Fair piece is better, but that's still an interview with the artist, not arms-length coverage. We need better sources to add that sort of content. Roan's success has led her to be called a "queer pop icon", "a superstar in the making", and a "visionary performer".[95][96][97] Roan has been credited with leading a "lesbian pop renaissance" on the music charts and within the cultural zeitgeist.[98][99] Roan's music brought the concept of compulsory heterosexuality into the forefront of mainstream pop music.[100] She has been praised for her "unapologetic authenticity" and "expression of her queerness and femininity" in her music and live performances, inspiring young women to embrace their own sexuality.[101][102] She has also been applauded for her image "rejecting the male gaze" within the pop landscape.[103] Roan has been praised for her "punkish" attitude towards the status quo for queer performers and applauded for "rewriting the rules of lovelorn pop."[104] Rolling Stone described watching Roan's performances as "like watching Michelangelo craft the statue of David in real time."[97]

Roan has received praise from within the music industry. Elton John invited Roan to join his Rocket Hour podcast and stated about her success, "It's wonderful to see true talent being recognized."[105] Roan was Olivia Rodrigo's top artist on her Spotify Wrapped for 2023,[106] and Roan features background vocals on three tracks of Rodrigo's, including her album Guts and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes soundtrack.[107] Lady Gaga commented "I love Chappell" under a TikTok video of Roan covering her song "Bad Romance" while on tour.[108] Ariana Grande stated "I really love Chappell Roan" in an Instagram post sharing a viral Wicked meme of Roan's Statue of Liberty costume at the Governors Ball Music Festival.[109] In June 2024, Sabrina Carpenter covered "Good Luck, Babe!" on Radio 1's Live Lounge, having expressed her admiration for Roan's work.[110]

(This is what I would like to add)

"Additionally, Roan has shown an active interest in supporting the rights of women and LGBTQ+ individuals [2], and her generosity is a large part of her image [3]. She often donates to charities such as The Trevor Project and urges her fans to support these causes. Roan actively donates profits from her ticket sales to LGBTQ+ charities as well."[4] Additionally, Roan has also done fundraisers for Gaza Aid and Relief [5] as well."

@UncleMooseMan42.o, per what I said above, that feels very promotional while being based mostly on non-[independent, reliable] sourcing. I'll leave this open in case anyone else disagrees, but I wouldn't add this based on the sourcing. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:25, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Under "Career" in the middle section (2022-23) it says "Casual" was released in October 2022, and in the following paragraph, it is mentioned again as being released in March of 2023. Ellenofficial (talk) 19:12, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Fixed: The source cited for the first segment was published in October 2022 but didn't actually say the single was released then, only that it would be in the future at that point in time. There was a bit of WP:OR or source misinterpretation going on there. The March 2023 release month was supported by its source when I checked. Left guide (talk) 03:09, 21 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Discography

edit

I propose forking the Discography section out to Chappell Roan discography ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:56, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

She doesn't have a particularly large discography? If anything, this section could be trimmed--the three notes are not necessary and the music video section adds little as well. How does it help our readers to move this content--of which only the chart positions of singles and the album are unique/noteworthy--out to another page? Discography deletion

edit

Hi answering, your question, i separate her discography, because it's relevant and long enough to have it own wiki page. Second and most importantly, i dragged the content, because unfortunately the language used isn't neutral and unbiased, as well it doesn't follow the basic patterns that every musician's wiki page does, (tour below awards and nominations??? since when?) third, this is a Wikipedia page not a Fan Page! Paradisetoshutdown (talk) 20:11, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I disagree, and Wikipedia requires you to gain consensus on the split before you perform it. I cannot think of a single separate discography page for an artist who has only released one album, outside of producers who have released dozens and dozens of singles. Cultural impact

edit

The first paragraph of “Cultural Impact” contains good relevant info but the writing feels out-of-character for this type of section. With the exception of the sentence on Rolling Stone, every sentence begins with some variant of “Roan has been praised for…” without mentioning who’s praised her (as opposed to something like "Critics have frequently praised Roan for..."), making the paragraph feel under-descriptive / under-sourced to the casual reader, as well as a bit tonally biased compared to equivalent "Impact" sections on pop artist articles.

In general the fact that this paragraph is almost entirely made up of quotes that describe and praise her artistry feels disorganized, 1. because many of them have more to do with artistry than impact, making them more suited for the “Artistry” section, OR making this paragraph’s section better suited for a title like “Public image and impact”), and 2. because it jumps into these quotes without first setting them up with a nice, dry, factual sentence like “Critical reception to Roan is generally positive, with praise concentrated on […]” as seen on Lorde’s article. The articles for Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift all take similar approaches, each beginning their discussions on the artists’ impact/recognitions with a broad setup sentence like “Swift has been credited with making a profound impact on the music industry […]”. I'm not sure what this performance adds beyond the last sentence of the third paragraph in Chappell_Roan#2024–present:_Career_breakthrough. The source you've provided is basically just a picture--there's no additional analysis. Is there anything specific you would add to the article about the ACL set? We don't need to list every time she draws a big crowd. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:28, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
