Characterization (science and engineering)?

Could this topic be expanded to science & engineering in general? I'm lightly editing Minnesota_Starvation_Experiment#Goals_and_methods and hit upon that word as an important one that could be easily misunderstood, but there's no good article to link to.

1998, Brian Voigt, “Glossary of Coastal Terminology”, in Department of Ecology Publication No. 98-105[1]:

Macroscopic testing

Would it be correct to arrange this paragraph such as:

• Mechanical testing including tensile, compressive, torsional, creep, fatigue, toughness and hardness testing (see also Impulse excitation technique and ultrasound techniques)
• Thermal testing including DTA, TGA, DETA
• Magnetoelectric testing including magnetometry, electro-transport
