More sources
editThis story has been told many times (Abu-Lughod 1994; Mele 2000; Tobocman 1999).

Unclear whether Graeber is referring to Charas or squatted evictions from the East Village, but wanted to dump these sources in case worthy of investigation:
- Abu-Lughod 1994; From Urban Village to East Village: The Battle for New York's Lower East Side
- Mele 2000; Selling the Lower East Side: Culture, Real Estate, and Resistance in New York City
- Tobocman 1999; War in the Neighborhood: A Graphic Novel
Stylization - All Caps
editSince CHARAS is an acronym of the original six organizers' names, it's often represented by those close to the project in all caps, while some more distanced writers like NYT have insisted on the stylization "Charas" which the editors for this page have so far relied on. Since the more sources added tend to stylize as the acronym I will adjust across the page. Please discuss if there is a good reason to convert back to proper case. - It might have begun as an acronym but as you've mentioned, it is more commonly presented without that stylization. A search of Google Books confirms this, hence why I titled it as I did. czar 22:16, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- Looking through the top 50 hits on Google when you search 'charas les' (just to get a sense of the commonness of the different stylizations) shows about a 4:1 preference for using the all caps CHARAS. The book CHARAS: The Improbable Dome Builders is by far the most common source with the most input from the org's members and it stylizes them all caps in the title and throughout. It's true that Google Books' entry for the book has it typed in proper case but a search inside that book [1] and inside reviews contemporary to it [2] show that it was stylized CHARAS and so it must have been improperly typed into the Google Books metadata in that instance. Another point of confusion is that the handwritten title in the original edition had a one-off stylization as 'ChaRas' although that corresponds to nothing. It's not fully clear the best way to stylize them but it definitely merits a discussion rather than a reversion. Mycoolsighman (talk) 03:22, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- It's also notable that when the NY State Assembly honored Chino Garcia in 2019[3] they used the all caps case in their official proclamation Mycoolsighman (talk) 03:45, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
