I'll give reviewing this a shot. Wizardman 15:51, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
Here are the issues I found:
- I'm presuming you've looked for a free image of him rather than a fair use. The infobox pic is fine as is but given when he was most active I'd be surprised if there's not a PD image out there.
- "Charles Smyth, Jr., married" comma not needed there.
- "His courses in petrology and chemical geology introduced students to subjects that were relatively new in the United States but nonetheless important for careers in mining." I'm not sure if the second part is necessary; it's not in the ref and, while I'm sure true, feels a bit tacked on.
- Commas are needed for "In [year]..." starts to sentences.
- "of the challenging region." not sure if challenging is needed, getting a bit into editorializing territory.
I'll put the article on hold and pass when the issues are fixed. Wizardman 03:44, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
I see that the writer is semi-active. Given this and the fact that it's pretty close to GA status, I'll let this stay on hold for a while if need be. Wizardman 15:45, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for your patience in conducting this review. I'll address each of your points in sequence.
- The image may well be public domain. I found it in the Proceedings of the Geological Society of America for 1937. It's in the public domain if the GSA didn't renew its copyright on the Proceedings, which I suspect they didn't. But until I knew for sure it seemed safest to assume otherwise and assert fair use. It was the only picture of him I found during an exhaustive search of sources.
- How about this?
- Fair enough; removed.
- I can't find any reference to this in the MOS, but it's not worth fighting over. Changed.
- The obituary noted the value of Smyth's contribution given how difficult the region was to work in. Unfortunately I don't have the Proceedings in front of me (it's not a trivial process to get one's hands on a copy, even briefly), so I can't be more specific than that. I do think it has bearing on evaluating his impact and skill as a geologist, so I think it has a place in the article.
- Thanks again for your patience. Work has demanded more of my time lately, but I should be available in two days' time in case you'd like to iterate again. Lagrange613 04:26, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
The fixes look good, so I don't have further concerns. When you do have time next, try to look into whether or not Proceedings had their copyright lapse; it's not a huge deal but it would make everything in the article fully free then. Article now passes. Wizardman 02:44, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
