Both Matthews (Birmingham City: A Complete Record. p. 74. ISBN 978-1-85983-010-9.) and Joyce (Football League Players' Records 1888 to 1939. p. 30. ISBN 978-1-899468-67-6.) give his date of birth as 5 November 1897, while Lincoln City F.C.'s player archive gives it as 5 December. I've gone with the December date as more likely: according to FreeBMD, his birth was not registered until the first quarter of 1898, which was a full 8 weeks after the November date.
