Sources differ as to McEleny's place and date of birth. Joyce gives the place of birth as Glasgow on 6 February 1872, which is the same as the Aston Villa player database. The Celtic wiki and the Swindon player database both give the date of birth as 3 March 1873, although the Celtic wiki adds "disputed", adding the place of birth as "Raymoghy, Ireland". As the book "Northern Irish Football Biographies"[1] includes a chapter on McEleney, this would tend to support the birthplace as being in Northern Ireland, rather than Glasgow.
