Charnwood's boundaries

edit

Is anyone interested in collaborating on improving this page? I hope to do some work on it. As a start it seems to me it should do more to describe where the forest bounderies are - or rather spell out the ambiguities about that. The geology could then be dealt with in more detail. Listing or describing a wider range of public spaces, wildlife sites, rivers and other geographic features could then be helpful. The historic development of settlement, land use, enclosure etc could be tackled. (The coin hoard ref appears to be a dead link, I cannot find any other ref to it. Is anyone aware of what it might refer to?) RobinLeicester (talk) 12:02, 5 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have several books on Charnwood Forest, some very old (e.g. Bloxam (1829), Mott (1868), Watts (1947), Dare (1925), Hadfield (1952)) as well as a few more recent ones - I plan to do some major editing on this topic at some point in the future, but probably not right away. If there's anything specific, however, please feel free to ask and I'll see what these sources might have - can't see anything about a coin hoard at first glance. --Michig (talk) 13:11, 5 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Coin Hoard - As this is very unspecific, with a dead citation, it doesn't seem helpful. In case anyone can shed some light on it, I have moved the text to here: An urn filled with Roman small brass and base silver coins was brought to light by a plough in 1841.<ref>[http://treasurehunting.tv/?p=24 Coin Hoard Article]</ref> RobinLeicester (talk) 01:06, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Extent

edit

I found it quite tricky to pin down what was or wasn't 'in' Charnwood. Fortunately Natural England has published their NCA scheme, which at least for Charnwood would seem to provide a supportable definition. RobinLeicester (talk) 01:25, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is no definitive answer to this question. The area that was enclosed in the early nineteenth century is defined, but highly irregular. It should also be recognised that pieces of land in the forest were acquired in the medieval period for use by a variety of parties. These assarts are sometimes well known, but some are hard to adequately define. John2o2o2o (talk) 21:54, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Geology and ref system

edit

I have taken the chance to add extra detail on the geology. I have also re-worked the refs to have a section for notes, which can list individual refs, including page numbers, and can make use of the sfn template. these then point further on to a much shorter list of references which in effect become a biblioraphy of the key works for the article. This seems to be how the sfn proponants intend it to be used, and seems to be the most sensible way of including page numbers, where the same book is cited multiple times. I would welcome feedback on whether this is a good or bad idea. RobinLeicester (talk) 01:25, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Quarries

edit

I am removing the comment promoting the activites of quarry companies from the main page and using neutral language instead. The recent extension of the quarry at Bardon Hill is and was controversial. This should be stated. John2o2o2o (talk) 21:54, 28 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wildlife sites

edit

This table became something of a monster as I compiled it. I would welcome feedback on whether it is appropriate, and whether the format best deals with the content. I may also have overdone the citation thing too - except it feels like it is now a useful pointer to both other wiki articles where available, and to external content on each site.
