Name

edit

Hello, Should Chéngdōu be written Chéngdū instead? --BraveTraveler 20:47, 23 December 2004 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the correct name of 成都 is Chéngdū. 37.128.246.71 (talk) 10:23, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I agree, this should be changed. --70.155.172.35 20:50, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I do not. I came across this city in a TV docu/entertainment piece last night. The subtext was Chengdu. It makes life difficult for us when we cannot refer to a name without trying to find some exotic keys. And really it is not necessary because language is for communicating and understanding, so the simple spelling would do the trick. I am by no means mono-lingual, change the keyboard to including the characters of my old language. But for French I can only ever remember the ALT130 for é, but never the cedille under the c, so a Francois can never be written, turns to F. Unnecessary complications should possibly be avoided. 121.209.56.80 (talk) 03:23, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation of name

edit

The article text states that the Standard Mandarin pronunciation is [ʈʂʰə̌ŋ.tú], but the description of the pronunciation example OGG file lists the name of the city as (成都; Chéngdū). The tone markings differ for both examples. Which is correct? Is one the local Sichuan pronunciation and the other the Standard Mandarin pronunciation, or something like that? skoosh (háblame) 15:10, 10 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Pop.

edit

The population figures are out of whack. They don't correspond with population figures elsewhere on wikipedia.

"There were close to 200 long-term foreign residents (not including Chinese from Hong Kong or Taiwan) living in the city in late 2004, according to unofficial US Consulate estimates" this seems like a non-sensical statement to me. there are many english tecahers who come and go, are they included? and does this just refer to Americans, Westerners, or also nationals of other nations? i think this statement needs to be removed. anyway, it is out of date.

I'm pretty sure that Sima Xiangru(179BC-117BC) was not a famous writer of Disney. 141.156.106.2 14:47, 25 September 2007 (UTC) The name should be Chengdu, that's correct, because 都 has 2 pronounciations in chinese:dou for the meaning of all together,du for the meaning of capital city. Chengdu in chinese means "become a capital". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.175.158.41 (talk) 20:43, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

earthquake???

edit

There was just a big earthquake 55 miles from the city, any info? 66.127.52.178 (talk) 07:50, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The earthquake in terms of economic losses was the second highest in absolute numbers in history, very close to that of Japan's Tohoku earthquake. It eclipsed significantly the Kobe and American Northridge earthquakes when taking into account the prices of goods in China and that of other nations.

This earthquake had the highest homeless count in history with at least 4,800,000 people requiring shelter due to their houses being destroyed, with some estimates being as high as 10 million people needing shelter after the quake.

More than five million rooms (around 1.5 million houses) were destroyed, and over 21 million rooms were damaged (around 6 million houses). This is more than the number of houses that are in the entire country of Australia.

This homeless total dwarfed also the numbers seen in Haiti and in other historical quakes.

The destruction of houses via shaking, and the landslides contributed to one of the highest death tolls (7th) in the last 100 years worldwide. The 87,000 fatalities and over 370,000 injuries left a lasting impact on families throughout the province. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryzhou (talkcontribs) 21:52, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

The article's been written like a travel guide in places. I've tagged the article as such, as well as for a few other issues. Paris1127 (talk) 07:15, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re: The article's been written like a travel guide in places Hi,Paris1127 , thanks for the comment. The content I've contributed to this page is of great historic and cultural significance to the city of Chegndu.I also write those paragraphs in my own words, from a local resident's perspective. So I don't know exactly what you mean by ‘like a travel guide’. You are welcome to improve and revise. Thanks a lot! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.209.150.218 (talkcontribs)

If you don't understand what I mean, then I'd suggest reading WP:NOT, specifically WP:NOTTRAVEL. Also, anything written in a Wikipedia article must not be original research; it's better if you have citations to back it up. If you have any more questions, just reply to this. Also, feel free to sign what you write on talk pages by typing 4 tildes. Paris1127 (talk) 04:29, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I will look into it. Serenpidity2012 (talk) 05:49, 7 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I will read the article and improve the current page. Jinyufz (talk) 06:57, 7 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Image placement

Manual of style says: Do not place images on the left at the start of any section or subsection. Images on the left must be placed somewhere after the first paragraph. Please, can we move them to the right? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:57, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Infobox composite image

edit

That image will be deleted soon. It contains many images not owned by the uploader. I suggest preparing a replacement. If it is not ready in time, we can use File:Chengdu City logo - 01.jpg. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:09, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Choose Commons images carefully, as some have recently been nominated for deletion. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:22, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I'm going to swap in the city logo for the time being even though the infobox calls for a "skyline". The city logo is supposed to only be used in infobox, and the composite contains images that are certainly not owned by the uploader. There is another composite already made at Commons, and that is also a choice. Plus, I will shop for a skyline image right now. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:24, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Remove the National Cental Cities title because the national level media or official have never recognize this title for Chengdu. Lordstone (talk) 17:06, 26 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

In the context of the Tiananmen protest movement there were also protests in Chengdu. There was violent suppression of these protests. It even made the New York Times. Unsourced material

edit

There is a large amount of unsourced material on this page that has been there for a long time. I would be grateful for guidance on whether it's best to try to find sources for what is here (a huge job!), or simply remove unsourced material and effectively start over on many of the sections. Smallboots (talk) 09:49, 1 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Agreed, this article is way too cluttered with irrelevant information that could be split into separate articles (if they are even true). This whole article smells of a Baike Baidu article; unsourced and with no regulation to what is included. I wouldn't be surprised if most of this article is just a translation of the one on there. Notable People

edit

Can we expand the notable people section? I found online that a lot of people are from Chengdu. I know that Shenyang, Dalian and some other Wikipedia pages have a huge list of notable people. Can you add more famous people from Chengdu such as sportspeople, actress/singers, politicians on the notable people section. I can also expand the list with you. Thanks Loveheart547 (talk) 22:32, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

You are an active editor - thank you! Please add people as appropriate. Springnuts (talk) 15:49, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Standard Chinese pronunciation

edit

Wikipedia and Wiktionary seem to list two conflicting pronunciations, [ʈʂʰə̌ŋtú] (here) vs. /ʈ͡ʂʰɤŋ³⁵ tu⁵⁵/ (Wiktionary). After listening to the sound sample, I'm wondering if the [ə] is correct, as it doesn't sound like that to my (untrained) ear, or if it's actually [ɤ]. Bfx0 (talk) 18:28, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ctuctu777

edit

@Ctuctu777 There seems to be a content dispute with a newly registered editor with various accounts with similar names and IPs. Firstly, your accusations of "malicious editing" is absolutely ridiculous and a violation of WP:ASSUMEGOODFAITH. Keep this up and I'll open a thread at WP:ANI for administrator attention. Secondly, your version is simply not an improvement, as the media I added to the article were in fact much more recent than the previous versions, whilst showing a better view of the subjects. Many images were in sections irrelevant to the image so I also fixed that. Pertaining to the gallery section which I assume is what you are referring to when you mentioned "deleting content", there is absolutely no need for 5+ images of random malls (especially multiple images of Taikoo Li) when there are many other historical landmarks in the city with greater historical significance that can be shown. Thus, your reverts are not constructive and throwing WP:BADFAITH accusations on top of that is absolutely ridiculous. ɴᴋᴏɴ21 ❯❯❯ talk 07:09, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
