I have changed the section on Rodeo. I can't remember from my last visit, but it is not advertised on the map (3mb PDF), and various web forums about the park suggest that it is still there but not operating this season. Can anyone shed more light on this? Jackqu7 19:18, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

It turned out to be crap, well remember what they did to that log flume at alton towers. The newly found Imperial Leather Bubbleworks has been given very poor reviews by enthusiasts , what it should get.SO if you are going to be riding it soon prepare for ducks , ducks and mmmmm.. ducks !.

History section on Chessington Zoo?

edit

Currently Chessington Zoo redirects to this article, but there is no information on the history of the original zoo. Any experts want to fill this omission? Mtford 20:58, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have tried to add more about the Zoo's history before, but it ends up being removed by someone. I have info and pictures on the history of Chessington Zoo 1931-1987 on my site http://www.chessingtonzoo.weebly.com/ if anyone who knows what there doing on Wikipedia, wants to add the info of the Zoo's past. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.193.47.13 (talk) 23:10, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

"a torso approaching 51 inches or more"

edit

There are a few things wrong with this:

  • approaching ... or more. What's this meant to mean? I'm guessing that somebody was trying to give a rough figure of what consistutes just too big to ride the ride. In which case it ought to be rewritten to make more sense, such as "larger than approximately 51 inches".
  • 51 inches in what direction? Top to bottom, left to right, wrapped around the widest part, wrapped around the narrowest part or what? While chest and waist measurements are well-understood around here, a torso measurement is something more ambiguous.
  • All height restrictions are given in metric units. So should this for consistency, if we're going to have it at all.
  • What's the source of this information, anyway?

-- Smjg (talk) 13:49, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

'Torso' is how people in the UK measure for rides. You may not understand it in America. --82.34.173.149 (talk) 16:53, 6 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

In my area of the UK, a torso is just a body region.... -- Smjg (talk) 14:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Format for paragraphs

edit

Hi, BenBowser and I are trying to get an expert opinion on which format for the areas section to use; I'm going to post the non-bullet point one because it's most basic, but that doesn't mean best - see User_talk:Earflaps/sandbox3#Options_for_areas_format Earflaps (talk) 13:48, 15 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Paragraphs without bullet points tend to be preferred, whereas for lists bullet points are generally utilized. Per the amount of text in each section, paragraph format sans bullet points is preferred in my opinion. For more information, see WP:LISTBULLET. I'm removing the cleanup template notice in the section. Northamerica1000(talk) 01:13, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Primary sources

edit

Just finished a big referencing push on the page, wanted to give an overview; the vast majority are primary references, but before knee-jerk tagging the page, take a look and notice that those sources are used for the 'current' sections, which mostly include the basic info about rides and restaurants from the home site (hopefully up to date, I'm not sure how maintained the home website is). I've found Chessington's webmaster is just irritatingly fond of including info on a thousand individual pages instead of one page, otherwise it wouldn't look like so much. Any controversial or subjective information has been linked to a third-party book, or cned. Earflaps (talk) 16:22, 15 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Doubt 1987 opening of amusement park

edit

The lede states Historically opened as Chessington Zoo in 1931, an amusement park was developed alongside the zoo, opening in 1987. However, I recall being there in, I think, the early 1970s and there were amusement rides, not just a zoo. So I wonder if the 1987 date is for some sort of revamp or expansion.--A bit iffy (talk) 12:37, 21 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

As I recall, it opened as "Chessington World of Adventures" (a theme park incorporating a zoo) in 1987. Prior to that it was "Chessington Zoo" (a zoo with some theme park attractions). If that can be confirmed, it should be easy to clarify that in the lede. Incidentally, I've just heard that the park is closed today, due to a significant fire before opening this morning. regards, Lynbarn (talk) 12:56, 21 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
The theme park at chessington did open in 1987 to add to the zoo, however there was a small fair ground before, could this be what you are thinking of. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BenBowser (talkcontribs) 15:40, 21 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I've simply added a short sentence about a fairground (unfortunately without a ref. though).--A bit iffy (talk) 18:39, 21 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Advertising

edit

Is it possible to keep this article encyclopaedic and neutral? I regard is as advertising when someone add info about what merchandise can be bought where. Or where you look to from your hotel room. Or the hight restrictions. This article needs a major clean out to make it a proper neutral article. The Banner talk 14:28, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

You could split the rides into a separate article where the detail will be better deserved Tátótát (talk) 22:51, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Edit proposal

edit

This article has far to many images in the article, a lot of them add, to my opinion, absolutely nothing to the article. That is why I propose to remove the section Gallery and all images from the section Chessington Theme Park (including the gallery). The Banner talk 20:37, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm a big fan of the ten photos in the theme park section (though I'm biased since it was my idea), but think cutting down on gallery size is reasonable. May have a good alternative for the gallery here: I've seen WikiMedia pages used as picture depositories before, this would be a rough start. Not sure where the most standard place to have the link would be, though. Earflaps (talk) 12:35, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
The pictures should add something to the article. An overview of entrances and common animals is just plain superfluous, to start with... The Banner talk 13:14, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
And, just because you have seen Wikipedia articles used as picture repositories does not mean it's correct (see WP:Gallery). The picture repositories are, and should remain in, Wikimedia commons, and the article contains a link to the Wikimedia category. You can also create articles of photos in Wikimedia commons, though I'm not a particular fan of that because the categories almost always show more pictures than the galleries once a few more images have been uploaded. Some uploaders create articles of their own photos on Wikimedia, which makes a bit more sense to me. Don Lammers (talk) 16:18, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
The ten pic gallery in the area section was an attempt at making it easy to scan theming of each area, without crowding the prose (on many other theme park pages they're typically crammed in as thumbnails to the right). However, I originally had it placed under the first introduction paragraphs for the section (where I think it's more pertinent), not at the very bottom. I'm not married to that particular format, though I'd argue that one carefully selected picture per area, somewhere on the page, is relevant and useful. Interesting about wikimedia, I'll have to look for some guidelines on photo articles; it might be nice to cull photos on that page to the ones showing unique features (as banner points out, not generic ones of just animals, etc.). Disruptive Edits

edit

@Shellwood and Rsrikanth05: A sincere request: please add a reason to your edit summaries ("vandalism"). I can tell what you did ("revert") and who you did it to, but I am left wondering why. The recent series of edits by 24.114.57.181 may be vandalism, but I can't tell because of the previous reversions of Who3450. I have left the IP edits for now, feel free to revert them if warranted. Should it be known about what Dennis' Madhouse used to be prior to that? I heard somewhere it was originally a play area promoting the lost show The Timekeepers of the Millennium... Visokor (talk) 07:29, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
