editWhen Chico Buarque wrote "Cálice" he means "Cale-se" for it I believe you must put this mean on your translation or say what it means. Gonlet is the literal translation and not the better translation.
two public copyfree Chico Buarge??
[Ouça em Real Audio com Chico Buarque ]
[Ouça em Real Audio com Chico Buarque / Tom Jobim ]

I've changed the translation slightly. Rather than "son of the other one", it is now "son of another". This preserves the consecutive use of "outra", present in the portuguese, and more closely resembles the meter of the original lyric. Robertoalencar 00:32, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Date of birth is given as 1944 in article, and 1945 in sidebar. Which is it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.210.47.14 (talk) 20:20, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Opinion
editQuite unnecessary to mention other musician like Caetano Veloso or Gilberto Gil as "also exiled" by the dictatorship. Actually i can´t remember of Gil and Caetano exile... they were censored by the dictatorship, but i can´t remember exiles. Also, even considering they were exiled... well no point in link Gil and Caetano since countless artist were also exiled...
As it is also unecessary to metion them as partners. Certainly they work together in some works... still Chico buarque and Caetano Veloso/Gilberto Gil are not usual/famous partners.
Edu Lobo, Vinicius de Moraes and Tom Jobim are his usual partners in lyrics and songs. To metion Caetano and Gil is the same as mention also every other musician who work along with Chico... unecessary. By the way, Gil and Caetano are ususally associated with other music references... quite oposite to Chico´s references(Bossa Nova).
Cavallazzi, 09 october 2006
- Although Cavallazzi's post dates from long in the past, it needs commenting on to avoid misleading readers.
- Cavallazzi's point about Chico Buarque's partnerships is valid. However, anybody who knows anything about Brazilian musical history knows that Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were exiled. A person who "does not remember" whether they were exiled or not is hardly qualified to comment on the matter.
- The fact is that, apart from Chico Buarque himself, the only musicians of his generation who had equivalent prominence and went go into exile were Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. Jorge Benjor and Milton Nascimento had similar standing, but neither of them went into exile. Consequently it was perfectly reasonable for the writer of the original Wikipedia article to bracket Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil together as exiles. In fact if you look at the Wikipedia article on Brazilian military government, you will see that they are quite correctly bracketed together there too. Brumel (talk) 11:57, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
I changed the part that mentions Chico Buarque as one of the great musicians of Brazil, anybody that studied music would tell you that he has nothing of a good musician. It makes no sense and it is irrelevant. ThankS BBSEKU
- I have a university degree in music and have been a professional musician (now retired) so I think I qualify as having "studied music". I would certainly say that Chico Buarque is one of the great musicians of Brazil, in fact I would place him in the top three. [I am only inserting this note because otherwise people who do not know much about Brazilian music might get confused by the extraordinary misinformation purveyed by BBSEKU.) Brumel (talk)
The part in wich Chico is considered "a famous communist" is ridicolous. The link is insignificant. I propose to eliminate it. Luca 25.02.2007
I eliminated the part that speaks about Chico as a famous communist. 01.03.2007 Luca
No Luca, it is not ridiculous, ridicolus is to take away a historical fact that provides a valid source, if you change it again I will have to report you. Thank you 03.16.2007 BBSEKU
- I have removed the "famous communist" allegation since it violates both WP:NPOV and WP:RS. Lyndon LaRouche's website does not qualify as a reliable source of information, especially when it comes to politics. - ||| antiuser (talk) (contribs) 19:00, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Well done. "Famous communist" is not the truth when applied to Chico Buarque. Thank you for the correction. --Justana (talk) 20:15, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Note on "Cálice"
edit"Filho da puta" would be closer to "motherfucker" than "son of a bitch"; you can hear the latter on prime time sitcoms, something that would never happen with "filho da puta" (or "motherfucker"). "Filho da mãe" is a better equivalent of "son of a bitch". Macgreco 18:13, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- "Filho da puta" is the literal translation of "son of a bitch"... I think it's more fitting to understanding the lyric. ||| antiuser (talk) (contribs) 17:15, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
On Calice: I don't think that "Calice" is a good choice for an example of Buarque, since it is a collaboration with Gilberto Gil and I have actually seen the lyrics attributed to Gil. Even if it was a Lyrical as well as musical collaboration, it would make sense to use an example from a song of Buarque's that was unambiguously his lyricallyIndividualperson 14:40, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I'd suggest not eliminating "Cálice" but putting "Construção" as well, it is a similar song in having a political theme and is completely by Chico.
Gold Trivia
editRead this on the trivia: "Chico is the brother of singer Miúcha and uncle of her daughter, singer Bebel Gilberto". This is gold.
- Indeed I agree it is far from clear ... maybe it should read "Chico is the brother of singer Miúcha (his sister) and uncle of her daughter, singer Bebel Gilberto (his niece)." I believe this would clarify the situation. Abtract 09:47, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- ATENTION!
Chico Buarque is NOT related to Aurélio Buarque. reference: http://terramagazine.terra.com.br/interna/0,,OI1110440-EI6782,00.html (HelenoBR)
Deleted text
editI deleted a piece of the text that included "Vai passar" (1983) as a not censored song. This information has no sense. There was not censorship in Brazil at that time. It was over in 1980. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Victor Silveira (talk • contribs) 04:05, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
