Introduction: more elaboration/ details should be included in the introduction.

  • The CHSQ identifies both behavioral and medical factors that contribute to sleep problems in children.[1]
  • The CHSQ helps identify possible underlying medical concerns including chronic illnesses such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and psychiatric illnesses such as ADHD.[1]

Question breakdown, scoring, and interpretation: more details

  • In the sentence: Parents are also asked if each behavioral characteristic is a current issue for the child. --- include "by circling "yes," "no," or "not applicable." for each question"[2]

Limitations: A section on the limitations of CHSQ should be added.

  • The CHSQ is completed by parents; thus, possible biases or inaccuracies may affect the results.[1]
  • CHSQ does not identify a specific sleep disorder diagnosis, it only identifies sleep disturbance problems that may exist.[1]

External Links/See Also: A section titled "External Links" or "See Also" should be added with links that directs readers to different sources about sleep disorders.

To add in scoring: The CSHQ provides psychometric data on a comprehensive, parent-report sleep screening instrument made for school-aged children. This test provides a total score in addition to eight sub scale scores, which express key sleep domains. [3]

Administration: The CSHQ has 45 items for scoring and several additional questions, which are used to help give administrators some potential useful information about the patients. It is specifically validated to be used on children aged between 6-12. Parents should be able to finish the pencil-and-paper in about 10-15 minutes. Introductory Paragraph: After the first sentence- "The CSHQ is available in a full and an abbreviated version, with the full version containing 52 questionnaire items and the abbreviated version containing 33 items. The questionnaire is to be filled out by a parent of guardian, and responses are related to the child's sleep behaviors that occur over the most recent week or a typical week." [Delete: The 52-question test is filled out by the parent and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete --there is no data to substantiate the latter statement] [Delete: sentence about reliability and validity of assessment.]

In the 'Question, Scoring, Interpretation' Section: In lieu of the first paragraph - "The CSHQ provides a total score from eight question domains: bedtime resistance, sleep-onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, night awakening, parasomnias, sleep disordered breathing, and daytime sleepiness. There are three more questions asking for the child's morning wake time, evening bedtime, and the duration of the sleep. With regards to a typical night's sleep experienced by the child, parents rate each item on a three point scale--usually, (occurs 5-7 times per week) sometimes, (2-4 times per week) and rarely' (0-1 time per week). In addition to these ratings, parents are also able to indicate whether each item is a problem by circling "yes" or "no" or "not applicable" for each item.

[Delete "Each question is scored.." in second paragraph, as it is included above.]

In lieu of last sentence of this section - "Research by Owens et al. (2000) has shown that a score of 41 or higher indicates a sensitivity and specificity to sleep problems. Overall, a higher score on the questionnaire indicates more sleep problems for the child.

New Section: Reliability and Validity of CSHQ

The CSHQ has demonstrated good reliability and validity in measuring child sleep habits and problems. [5] [6] The assessment has also been translated into multiple languages, including Dutch[7], Chinese[8], Persian [9], and Portuguese[10], most of which have studies demonstrating their individual reliability and validity.
