Adding in a qualifier

edit

I attempted to add in "potentially in a pejorative or xenophobic sense" but it was removed. I think it could go back in without overly complicating the disambig nature of the page. Many dictionaries indicate when a a definition of a word is typically used in the pejorative. And on this website, many other disambiguation pages indicate pejorative status:

and a large number of others...maybe 50 others. See [1] --Epiphyllumlover (talk) 01:26, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Not everyone uses it derogatorily, so I think mentioning that on the disambiguation page may not be neutral. Like Spanish Flu, Ebola, and West Nile Virus (all location based), to many people it is just another name for the virus. And for example, if you look at the Mongoloid disambiguation, it only applies to one specific usage "Mongoloid Idiot", but does not say that the term mongoloid itself is pejorative. The majority of your other examples only apply to specific slurs as well. Symphony Regalia (talk) 02:28, 23 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree that not everyone uses it derogatorily. I will attempt a more nuanced edit, with references.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 17:09, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Come one, this is what people searching for "china virus" are looking for, not some tomato virus no one has ever heard of. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.20.29.42 (talk) 12:55, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

potato/tomato family

edit

the new changes to the article contains the phrase "potato/tomato family". i recall Biology class and i don't think potato and tomato are in the same family. the way it was phrased before, as a virus affecting plants, was better because it does not imply these are both in the same family. potato, iirc, is a tuber, a tomato, iirc, is a fruit. 74.44.163.163 (talk) 19:05, 20 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

The family here is Solanaceae. – Uanfala (talk) 19:08, 20 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
interesting. it seems the slash is discouraged by the MOS, specifically MOS:SLASH. 74.44.163.163 (talk) 19:11, 20 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

why? so you can undo it again? instead of attempting to fix it again, i went ahead and tagged weasel inline and citation needed. speculation isn't really for this sort of page per the policies i read. 74.44.163.163 (talk) 06:39, 21 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
