Brett Sutton

I added the Controversy section which mentions her relationship to controversial coach Brett Sutton. This connection is verifiable and also his criminal record is verifiable. This connection is considered one of the biggest controversies in current Ironman society: world champion is coached by a convicted child molestor. In any sport and especially in Ironman this information should be part of the neutral and objective definition. Wikipedia is not a PR machine for athletes but an objective presentation of information as they are and surely their relationship is considered extremely controversial.NikolaT (talk) 21:43, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

NikolaT, I removed the section because it was a clear violation of WP:BLP. See the sentence in the banner above about "Controversial material that is unsourced or poorly sourced". I suggest you follow the link and read the whole policy page.

There are several other reasons why your addition was inappropriate. Among these are:

• This material (if it can be modified to remove the policy problems) really belongs in the Brett Sutton article, where it can be put in context. (The Sutton article itself is currently in a really dreadful state, concentrating as it does on only one aspect of his life and career, and dealing inadequately with that one aspect.)
• You cannot infer that because A supports B over some subject X, therefore A supports B over some unrelated subject Y. Apart from being a logical fallacy, it also violates WP policy on no original research and in particular synthesis of published material which advances a position.
• This is an article about Chrissie Wellington, not Brett Sutton.
• Even assuming the material contained no policy violations, it was in the wrong place in the article. There might be room in the article for a new section dealing with CW's training methods, nutrition, equipment, and so on (which are unusual, so worth mentioning), and within that section a very carefully worded sentence or two on her relationship with Sutton.

Thank you for your explanation. Since I follow the Ironman scene I am aware of the issue but you are right and I do agree with you. I also agree that Brett Sutton article needs revision. I have added his criminal record to add balance to his previous unique focus only on his most recent career. I will try to find documents which are proof of the controversy or will write an article about it myself and have it published and hopefully that can be a writen document of the controversy. All Brett Sutton athletes are very supportive of him and do advertise him heavily, this is unique and strange and is enough for it to be controversial and is considered as such but there is a lack of internet documentation of this behaviour. I have broken the habit of a wiki-lifetime, and added a sentence to the lead about Chrissie's work on gender inequality, which is neither sourced nor (yet) supported by any text in the article body. This was prompted by the petition she has initiated, with Marianne Vos, Emma Pooley and Kathryn Bertine for women to be given equal treatment in the Tour de France.

I intend to add a fuller treatment of this subject in the future (it goes far beyond the TdF petition), but for the time being I can only edit intermittently, for short periods only. Please be patient.
