With or without violins?

As Ricardo Luna writes in the booklet of his CD:

... The reason for the combination of instruments and choir is not necessarily the idea of specific sound but rather a technical "solution" or "precautionary measure" - to prevent the pitch of the choir from dropping.

The bracket Bruckner made on the first line of violins (stating that it was "better without violins") suggests that the composer had not really planned the accompaniment of the strings - but maybe deemed necessary - which would mean that he conceived the work ideally for eight-part choir with brief interventions of the trombones and that he had written the strings colla parte to prevent any intonation problems. In any case, I decided for this CD to record the motet with the entire scoring, since for me the introduction of the violins brings with it a special modal melodic ductus, which goes far beyond the function of mere accompanying counterpoint. Even if Bruckner might have written the string accompaniment for no more than technical reasons he did so deliberately and in accordance with his own high artistic standards.
