wrong title
editIn general there is no "Saint Mary" church in the Orthodox tradition, it's too simplistic. Churches dedicated to the Theotokos are associated with specific relevant events. For example there are churches dedicated to the "Annunciation of the Virgin" or the "Dormition of the Virgin". The last is the case of this church. The proper Albanian name is "Fjetja e Hyjlindëses Mari" istead of the simplistic "S. Merise". The English translation of the event is called Dormition of the Theotokos or of the Mother of Jesus. It's celebrated in 15 August.Alexikoua (talk) 11:33, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
- The above is overall correct, but the only reliable source that I found for the name in Albanian is Kisha e Fjetjes së Virgjëreshës, where "virgjereshe" means "the virgin", and I don't find reliable sources with "hyjlindese" (mother of the god): by the way, "hyj" is a a word more used for pre-christian gods, in Albanian. I made the change accordingly. SethGoldberg (talk) 13:45, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Fragment of the True Cross
editA picture of the famous icon, made with a fragment of the True Cross, can be found here. The icon was stolen in 1989, and several times Pranvera Hoxha, daughter of dictator Enver Hoxha, has been accused in the media to have been part of the stealing plan. Since 1989 the cross cannot be found. One of the most important testimonies is that of Stefan Miha, local history teacher, see here. --SethGoldberg (talk) 14:04, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
- I've just found an RS that supports this incident. Good catch.Alexikoua (talk) 08:49, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
History
editThe foundation of the church dates back to 6th century at the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian (527–565 AD).[3] The latter erected the church in memory of his mother.[3]
Why is the word "latter" used here? there is only one person listed in the prior sentence. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.4.96.190 (talk) 01:05, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- You're right. I've changed it. In the future, feel free to be bold and make the change yourself :). Opencooper (talk) 03:01, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
