Jesús "Chuy" GarcíaChuy Garcia – In his professional and public life Commissioner García goes almost exclusively by the nickname Chuy. Per WP:Commonname I think it would be better if the article title reflected that. Nevermore27 (talk) 04:20, 2 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Oppose First of all it would be García, not "Garcia". Secondly, he does not "almost exclusively" go by Chuy. His official Commission website, campaign website, Facebook page, YouTube page and Twitter page all call him "Jesús "Chuy" García" and not just "Chuy García". Then there are the sources: Chicago Tribune, NBC Chicago, ABC Chicago, CBS Chicago, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tonight, Bloomberg, The Huffington Post, Latin Post, WGN Radio, USA Today, Yahoo News, The Christian Science Monitor, Fox News Latino, Fox News Chicago, Chicago Business, Chicago Magazine, The Guardian, Red Eye Chicago, The Washington Post and WVON all also call him "Jesús "Chuy" García" and not just "Chuy García".
In fact, I haven't been able to find a single source that only calls him "Chuy García", making no reference to his first name or the fact that "Chuy" is only a nickname. Conversely, several sources, for example Chicago Reader and the Cook County Commissioners official website call him just "Jesús García". Then there's Salon, which calls him "Jesús "Chuy" García" and "Jesús García" but not "Chuy García". Given that the overwhelming number of sources and his own websites call him "Jesús "Chuy" García", per WP:COMMONNAME it should remain at "Jesús "Chuy" García" because that is the one that is "most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in reliable English-language sources)". Oppose for the same reasons as Tiller. The way we have it now is the common name in RS.Haberstr (talk) 01:56, 8 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oppose per Tiller.  — Amakuru (talk) 12:30, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oppose the redirect exists, and we don't have an article on Ron Raygun. μηδείς (talk) 18:07, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation of Nickname

edit

How is "Chuy" pronounced, like Chewbacca's nickname, "Chewy"? I read about this guy in the national news, but they don't give a pronunciation in the text. Or is it "Shy" like Chi-town? If someone can answer and add the IPA that would be helpful, and I can add the IPA myself if necessary. Thanks. μηδείς (talk) 18:05, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it's Chewy as in Chewbacca. He says it in this ad, for example. Tiller54 (talk) 19:09, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Rethinking the name of this article

edit

Because of the move discussion tried in 2015, I want to talk about the name before starting another one. Should it be moved to "Chuy García"? I think it's the WP:COMMONNAME now. Though his website is still listed this way, I see alot of sources calling him "Chuy". – Muboshgu (talk) 03:32, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Strong support Literally no one calls him Jesús. Therequiembellishere (talk) 16:51, 21 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oppose Even though I'm the editor who requested the move in 2015, I disagree with the proposed move at this time. If you see his campaign site [1], he goes professionally by the name Jesus "Chuy" García (or simply Jesus Chuy) almost exclusively. Yes people colloquially call him Chuy only, but that's not the standard for naming. Nevermore27 (talk) 07:43, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Support As a Chicagoan, I have never heard no one call him Jesus. He is known and goes by Chuy in Chicago. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 06:58, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in Jesús "Chuy" García

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Jesús "Chuy" García's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "primaryresults":

  • From Adam Kinzinger: "2016 Illinois primary results, March 15, 2016". Chicago Tribune. Retrieved May 13, 2016.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 05:20, 3 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
