13 deaths on 22 September 1940?

edit

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website lists by name 13 members of City of Bagdad's crew that is says all died on 22 September 1940. They were the chief engineer; quartermaster; wireless officer; cook; and nine lascars. At that time, all of the surviving crew had been prisoners aboard Atlantis for more than two months. They were not transferred to Durmitor until 26 October. The wireless officer was wounded when Atlantis shelled City of Bagdad on 11 July, so he may have died of his wounds. However, I have failed to find an incident in Atlantis' history to explain how or why another dozen PoWs could have died on the same day. I have therefore omitted the incident, as I cannot give an adequate account of it. Best wishes, Motacilla (talk) 02:11, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
