Government of JohannesburgCity of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality – This article name does not conform to the standard of the other Metropolitan Municipalities in South Africa. The government of Johannesburg is actually called the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Park3r 18:13, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

MLCs

edit

After the mid -1990's there were MLCs established (Metropolitan Local Councils) as a transitional measure, before the Metropolitan Municipality was created. Is there more information on these? I have found a list here: [1] Park3r (talk) 22:27, 8 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

2016 Municipal election results

edit

When the 2016 Municipal election results are incorporated into the article, I would like to suggest that the 2011 results are retained and not written over. Wayne Jayes (talk) 14:13, 7 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with Regions of Johannesburg

Merge.

Regions of Johannesburg is innately a sub-page of City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, and the separation has introduced duplication and greatly reduced comprehensibility. Batternut (talk) 18:02, 7 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Municipality or City?

edit

Hi. We have a paragraph in the article which says:

Johannesburg is a divided city: the poor mostly live in the southern suburbs or on the peripheries of the far north, and the middle- and upper class live largely in the suburbs of the central and north. As of 2012, unemployment is near 25% and most young people are out of work. Around 20% of the city lives in abject poverty in informal settlements that lack proper roads, electricity, or any other kind of direct municipal service.

So, here, in places where we have used the word "city", aren't we supposed to be using the word "municipality"? What I mean is, how can we tell people that Orange Farm and Midrand are in the same city?

When we say "peripheries of the far north", we are talking about Diepsloot and Ivory Park, right? Even just these two are not in the same city!

So, the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality has got many settlements within it such as Sandton, Roodepoort, Orange Farm, Midrand, Lenasia and others. It doesn't seem right for us on Wikipedia to treat all these settlements as "one city". That's like saying Nigel and Thembisa are in the same city just because they are in the same municipality and we all know they are not in the same city.

So, I insist that we must change the way we use the word "city" in this article. Thanks. GeographicAccountant (talk) 22:23, 21 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
