edit"It was widely reported (but denied by Senator Smathers) that while stumping in rural Florida Smathers said of his opponent:
"Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, and has a sister who was once a Thespian in New York. Worst of all, it is a documented fact that Mr. Pepper matriculated while in college, engaged in acts of public mastication, is an active homo sapien, and before his marriage, he is said to have practiced celibacy!" " Reference: [1] ... any more verifiable source on this? dml 17:58, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- it was a hoax invented by a newsman according to historians. See [2]Rjensen 18:06, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- in an even better version, he was said to have "publically matriculated at the University of Florida" (despite his never having actually enrolled there) and that his brother admittedly routinely engaged in heterosexual practices. 2600:1004:B110:497C:65AF:E45D:E4ED:DF76 (talk) 02:35, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
Ending
editHi everyone. I don't no much about Sen. Pepper, but maybe a section on his later years and death and lying in state could be included? Happyme22 01:13, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Additions to Senate section
editI'm concerned about the tone of the comments added to the section on Pepper's Senate service. It seems to painting him as pro-Communist without adequate sources. For instance, the third paragraph begins with "At a speech made on November 11, 1946 before a pro-Soviet group", without identifying the group, or who called it "pro-Soviet". That paragraph cites the New York Times at the end of the paragraph, but does not list either a writer or a title for the article. As all of the archives of the New York Times are now available for free, it would have been nice if a link to the cited article had been provided, and it will be difficult to find the article without knowing the writer's name of the title of the article. -- Donald Albury 22:48, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
To those who said the references to Pepper's pro-Soviet proclivities needed referencing, I have now provided these. See footnotes 2 and 3. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.138.47.133 (talk) 21:17, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Longest serving member of Congress from Florida
editI edited this bit out of the article. Pepper served 41 plus years in Congress, first in the Senate(1936-50) then in the House of Representatives.(1962-1989).
Florida Congressman Charles Edwin Bennett was a Florida Congressman for 44 years(1948-92) serving a North Florida Congressional district centered on Jacksonville. Another Florida Congressman, Dante Fascell also served longer in the House of Representatives than Pepper.- William 17:49, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Change consensus; image vote
editI thank User:Curbon7 yet again for his dedication to defending WP:Consensus. I now wish to change the consensus via an image vote. I believe Image A would be better, since it's in color, represents the peak of his career, and it's of a higher resolution. 600 × 715 vs 862 × 1,022. I vote for Image A.

- On a purely subjective basis, I like image B. Image A just seems to be very busy to me (the stripes to his left, the deep shadow on the right side of his face merging with the very dark background), distracting from the image of the man. Donald Albury 18:42, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
