editPleae do not use fair use images taken from the book to illustrate the article about the book's author. See WP:FUC for more information about the appropriate application of fair use images. Rklawton 14:08, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Not a writer.
editI have deleted twice the category "Cuban Writers" from this stub. Someone keeps adding it. Having published an article in a newspaper or one book in a vanity press (i.e., paying for that publication) does not make someone a writer. Please, respect the seriousness of the information posted on Wikipedia or the article will be deleted.
- Good point. Vanity press does not make someone an author. Heck, the article doesn't even list book's title. Rklawton 13:14, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- The book is listed in the references.Callelinea 16:18, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Mr. Gomez qualifies as a writer, please read the definition of a writer and let me know why he is not a writer by wikipedia standads. Also please sign your comments. Callelinea 16:37, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Ernestlake 23:27, 1 August 2007 (UTC): Mr. Gomez might qualify as a writer for his family, but not for a project as Wikipedia. This is the reason: A writer worth of being included in any encyclopedia (and Wikipedia IS an encyclopedia) is a person whose books have found their way to a publisher. No person who has published a book or two, after paying for that publication, qualifies for the category of writer in any dictionary or encyclopedia. That is why García Márquez and Isabel Allende are included as writers in these type of projects, but not my aunt, who has three books of poems and one short-story collection, all of them published because she paid for them. - Could you please state the rule in Wikipedia that states that deffinition of a "writer", because in history many writers paid to have their books published. So until you can prove your rule I must differ with your deffinition of what a writer is. As to him publishing his own book I have no idea, but I bought it a a book store here in Miami.Callelinea 05:07, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Even though some writers paid for some of their books in the past, nowadays, when vanity press is something anybody can afford, paying for his own book does not make that person a writer to be listed together with Ray Bradbury, Henry Miller or Shakespeare ―or in the case of Cubans, together with Jose Marti, Reinaldo Arenas o Alejo Carpentier. Moreover, those few writers that in the past paid for their books, had to wait decades or centuries to be considered writers as such. In fact, the majority of the people who paid for their books in the past are NOT listed today as writers in any Encyclopedia. They did not past the test of time. I am sure Mr. Gomez is a very decent lawyer and human being, but unfortunately that does not make him an artist. Maybe in the future he will prove otherwise, but for now he can't be counted among them. By the way, the place where Mr. Gomez's book was printed is a company used by many Cuban exiles for publishing their books of memories, poetry, etc. It is a vanity press. I know this because this is one of the presses my aunt contracted to publish one of her books. There are hundreds of people that have published books, paying for them. This does not make them writers. I play the guitar fairly well, and sometimes I play during my family and friends parties, but I do not list myself as a musician. Maybe if someday someone pays me for playing in a concert or a bar, I'll do. ;-)) I Ernestlake 20:03, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
