Terminology

Does anyone mind if we change (for a more limited definition, etc) to (also known as clinical biochemistry or clinical chemistry)? Ian Mc

I never heard the term chemical pathology...my degree is Clinical Chemistry - are there labs called "chemical pathology"? NanF

Chemical Pathology is a UK term but is not uniformly applied. Clinical chemistry is more likely to be found in the US where, as University system doesn't have Biochemistry as an independent subject, they therefore also don't have Clinical Biochemistry labs. I would support a merger of the pages as it makes no difference to the test profiles whatever the lab calls itself. Ianmc 21:13, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

On checking the American Board of Pathology webpage, the US certification officially is "Combined Clinical Pathology and Chemical Pathology". The pages are already merged, since "clinical chemistry" redirects here. I've changed my mind - let's keep it the way it is. - Rustavo 17:13, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

OK, now I've changed my mind again. I am trying to take a systematic approach to nomenclature issues for pathology-related pages as part of Wikiproject Pathology, using a combination of # of google hits, # of pubmed hits, and governing body preference. Despite the governing body preference for chemical pathology, clinical chemistry is clearly the more commonly used term on the Web in general and in biomedical publications:

OK, after moving this page from Chemical pathology, I updated all the pages with double redirects and found that most of them were actually piped links such that the text on the page already read "clinical chemistry." So apparently most wikipedia editors also agree that "clinical chemistry" is the preferred term. -Rustavo 00:09, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Wiki Education Assignment: CHEM 300

This article did a good job in giving an overview of this field, but it can definitely benefit from having some extra sections and reorganizing the lead.

Lead

• After “All biochemical tests come under chemical pathology.”, I would place the last sentence of the paragraph “The type of test required dictates…” next, then briefly explain different types of assays, techniques, and different apparatus commonly used in this field.
• I would delete the “Serum is the yellow….”, as we can add a link that directs readers to a “Serum” Wikipedia page. Also, I wouldn’t discuss how centrifugation operates here in lead as this would be too specific. This sentence would go better with the key techniques mentioned in the suggested “Instrumental Methods” down below.
• I would move the subspecialties of clinical chemistry to a separate section.

Here are some of my suggestions for new sections:

History

• This section would discuss the origin of clinical chemistry in more detail, such as the founder of this field (I believe it is Antoine Laurent Lavoisier) and a brief description of how the person laid the foundation of this field.
• I would also suggest discussing about the field during the 20th century, specifically about Otto Knut Folin and Donald Dexter Van Skyle and some of their major contributions to the field. This could be the volumetric carbon dioxide gas analysis apparatus, the Duboscq-type colorimeter, etc.
• Some achievements of this field such as discoveries of new biomarkers or key technologies over the years can also go in here.

Tests I would also suggest expanding on this, discussing in more details about each type of assay, what analyte(s) the assay screens for, which techniques are used to perform the assay instead of listing out all the analytes of each assay.

Instrumental Methods

• This section would explain about the current key techniques, including specimen collection, handling, and processing, different analytical (osmometry, electrochemistry, spectrophotometry, electrophoresis) and optical techniques (chromatography, mass spectrometry), etc.
• Modern clinical chemistry relies heavily on automation during sample handing, processing, measurements, storages, etc.

Sub-specialties This section would go into more details about different subfields of clinical chemistry, the tests and analytes they want to screen for or analyze, etc.

Citation There is a significant lack of citation in this article. The definition of clinical chemistry, its brief origin, techniques, the workload of a medical laboratory, etc should include some citation in the footnote. There is one citation mentioned in this article, but the source was from 2014 which is almost a decade ago. I would suggest replacing the source with a newer one, or have some additional sources that are up-to-date that can back up this source.

Images There is also a significant lack of images in this article. I would suggest adding a few images of Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, Otto Knut Folin, and Donald Dexter Van Skyle in the “History section”. I would also suggest adding images of the volumetric gas analysis apparatus and the Duboscq-type colorimeter in the 20th century.
