History

I think this could do with information about the history of the clipboard. Has it been present in all GUI evnironments, or which was the first (or first few, as the case tends to be with GUI features) to implement it. Nick Fel 09:28, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the shift-delete/ctrl-insert combos were the original clipboard manipulation keys in the first versions of Windows. The alternate ctrl-X/C/V ("borrowed" from MacOS) were added much later. Since Microsoft were [1] by Apple for "look and feel" issues in 1988, and I started using both Windows and MacOS in 1987 I'm pretty sure that these were not available in Windows 1.0 and probably not in 2.0. This isn't true. The early "online" editors (1960s) used these control characters. I added the earliest reference I know of to Control-V.--Quinn d (talk) 02:44, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

The reference you added to Cut, copy, and paste does not support this, unfortunately. Can you clarify? See: Talk:Cut, copy, and paste#QED_origin_of_Control-V_for_paste?.

Comment: not all cut-and-paste is done through the (one) clipboard. I also think it should be kept separate. Before there was a "clipboard" there were buffers (and there still are), and these commands were used to move text and commands in and out of the buffers.--Quinn d (talk) 02:44, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

I *think* Nick Fel was asking for the history of the clipboard feature at all. The Ctrl-C Wikipedia page say it was present on Xerox PARC, but it lacks of citations (Control-C#In_command-line_environments) -- Arturotena (talk) 16:11, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Unclear and misleading

In older versions of Windows the common practice was to open a copy of the "Notepad" or "Wordpad" editor

Moving list of clipboard software to "Clipboard Manager" article, removing section "Operating system-specific clipboards"

As part of extra-credit work for a course I teach, a student would like to significantly improve this article by adding implementation details and history about clipboards. We both feel that the following two sections in the current version of the article should be (re)moved:

• We'd like to move Clipboard (computing)#List_of_clipboard_software to the Clipboard manager article. This list would much better fit there, as it really is a list of clipboard managers, not of operating-system clipboards.
• Furthermore, we'd like to remove large parts of Clipboard (computing)#Operating_system-specific_clipboards that describe shortcuts for copy/cut/paste on different operating systems. These shortcuts do not belong to the clipboard (as an interface provided by the OS) but to the interaction technique Copy and paste. As the shortcuts are already described in the latter article, we'd like to remove this information from Clipboard (computing) and replace it with a link to Copy and paste.

Are there any objections to these changes?

An assesment has been requested by raphman. I am assessing this as a low C-class or high Start-class. With benefit-of-doubt, I have marked it as a C-class, mid-importance computing article.
