'Phags-pa inscriptions
editThe 'Phags-pa script could be used for all of the languages of the empire, but which language(s) does it record on this object? The article says that the "Record of Merits" is in Mongolian, and I would guess the 'Phags-pa versions of the sutras are also in Mongolian only, but this is not made clear. - The 'Phags-pa script version of the "Record of Merits" is in Mongolian language, but the Phags-pa versions of the dharani sutras are in Sanskrit not Mongolian language -- because it is a transcription of Sanskrit text in 'Phags-pa script. In fact, all the different script versions of the dharani sutras are in Sanskrit as they are all transcriptions of Sanskrit text, and do not represent native Chinese, Tangut, Uighur, Mongolian or Tibetan language (except for the small character transcription annotations "two joined" 二合 in Chinese, and "long" [marking a long vowel] in Tangut). I hoped I had made this clear, but obviously not, so I will clarify the text later today. BabelStone (talk) 09:52, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Perhaps if you said "transcribe" rather than "write" two Sanskrit Buddhist dharani-sutras it would be clearer. Kanguole 10:05, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- I've clarified as suggested. Hope it is clear now, but if not please make any necessary changes to the wording. BabelStone (talk) 12:32, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. One minor point: what's a "summary transcription"? Kanguole 13:08, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- That's a very good question! I realized this afternoon that I've never looked at the Tangut and Chinese dharani-sutra summaries ("summary" / "略抄" is the term used in Murata 1957), but having checked the Chinese and Tangut texts in Murata I see that the summaries are not abridged transcriptions of the Sanskrit texts as I had assumed, but are explicatory texts on the dharani-sutra in the Chinese and Tangut languages respectively. I'm not quite sure that "summary" is exactly the right word, but that is the term that the source uses, and without spending some considerable time comparing the summaries with each other and with the Sanskrit text I don't know of a better term to use.
