Snoopys Mills Transcription Error
editEvery reference since 1864 (when postmaster Samuel Snoddy gave his name to the mill on Coal Creek) cites the name of this location as "Snoddy's Mills" and never "Snoopys Mills." Ronald L. Baker and Marvin Carmony included the name of the location in their printed compilation of Hoosier place names "Indiana Place Names." When the list was digitized, an error of transcription occurred which transformed the word "Snoddy" into "Snoopy." The U.S. Geological Survey used this erroneous spelling in their geonames.usgs.gov web page for Coal Creek. Do not cite the USGS web page as it includes the transcription error as a variant name.
I have physically traveled to Coal Creek and verified the spelling is in fact "Snoddy's Mills." Do not use the variant "Snoopy's Mills" because it is inaccurate.
