Etymology
editWhat is the etymology of this toponym, Cognac? Alexander 007 08:05, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Geography
editI replaced the map in this section. The previous one was in the German language and this is the English language Wikipedia !
In addition it was a map of "The Way of St James" an entirely distinct topic from the topic it was illustrating. I had never heard of the Way of St James until I read the caption for the map.
It is not good Wikipedia style to use a specific map to illustrate an article that is not on the same specific topic.
I created a general map of the same region and posted it.
cognac
editA city of western France on the Charente River north-northeast of Bordeaux. It is famous for its distilleries, which have manufactured and exported cognac since the 18th century. Population: 19,534. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.188.177.200 (talk) 22:07, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Requested move
edit- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Cognac moved to Cognac, France and Cognac (brandy) moved to Cognac. Favonian (talk) 17:49, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
– Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, in the absence of a disambiguation page, the predominant use of a term should correspond with the article name. Access statistics show that the brandy consistently has more than 5 times as many page views as the French town. Google and dictionary checks confirm that the beverage is the predominant use of the term. Moreover, I suspect that many of the page views for the French town are actually accidental – due to people looking for information about the brandy and finding a different article than they were seeeking. BarrelProof (talk) 16:38, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- Support Frankly, I'm skeptical that many people even know that Cognac is a place. Note that Champagne describes the wine, and the place it at Champagne (wine region). --BDD (talk) 17:58, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- Addendum: I also prefer Cognac, France as the destination article for the place, and with the nominator in support and no one opposed, I suspect BarrelProof could modify the proposal to make that explicit. --BDD (talk) 15:57, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Alternative suggestion and comment by nom: I notice that there currently is a redirect article at Cognac, France. We could use that for the article about the place in France. As a further comment, I notice that many of the Wikilinks that currently link to Cognac are errors caused by people thinking they are linking to the beverage article – e.g., in Tom Collins, Manhattan (cocktail) (I just removed that one), French 75 (cocktail), XO, Hanky-Panky cocktail, Allied Domecq, Barrel, The Famous Grouse, Aguardiente, etc., etc. —BarrelProof (talk) 21:43, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- Support, the drink is the primary topic, not the locality. The exact target for the rename could be Cognac, France or anything else that is reasonable. — P.T. Aufrette (talk) 01:17, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Support clearly it is the potent potable, not the locality, that is primary. 70.24.251.208 (talk) 05:26, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Support but move Cognac to Cognac, France. The drink seems to be the primary topic. There are many incoming links to Cognac that are about the drink, not the place. JIP | Talk 09:12, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Support the concept with the move of Cognac to Cognac, France. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:23, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

As a result of this move, I have tried to go through all incoming links to Cognac, and change all links to the place, rather than the drink, to Cognac, France. So far I have fixed links in 32 articles, but I don't feel the energy to go through any more today. Probably I'll continue tomorrow. JIP | Talk 19:21, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- Good. I just fixed about 50 more of those links. –BarrelProof (talk) 21:54, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- I just fixed 19 more, but there seems to still be plenty left to fix. I guess fixing all these incoming links will take well into the year 2013. JIP | Talk 06:48, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, now all the links are fixed. And it only took three days. JIP | Talk 05:12, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks (on behalf of the readers) for the cleanup. –BarrelProof (talk) 05:31, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
