- Just seen this. There is some general 'philosophy' about this, which I supposed went back to Cohomology Operations:Lectures by N.E. Steenrod edited by David B.A. Epstein. I think it came up when people realised that in the case of K-theory the operations are closely tied into the theory of symmetric functions. Charles Matthews 10:59, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
