Advertising

edit

This article is shameless, bold-faced advertising - right down to its posting of weekly promotions, coupons and scratch and saves --Andrew Saxton 23:39, 31 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think your posting in the wrong place, I cant see any Advertsing in it. DXRAW 09:04, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
re:"I cant [sic] see any Advertising in it." Perhaps 'Advertising' is the wrong term, but the article does read like a 'puff piece'. The 'Legal issues' section needs a lot of work, currently citing only two issues. It omits the issue of "Coles staff launch $150 million legal action against the supermarket", for instance. (Source: https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6156896264001) --- So, sure, the article is not literally "shameless, bold-faced advertising" BUT neither does it give the full picture of everyone's favourite Australian supermarket.
If you're talking about the promotions section, I'd hardly call it advertising considering it's relatively small size. Jack Nelson 09:06, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't like the line about "Since it's humble beginnings, Coles has improved..." thats fairly high on the bs meter.. The Bi-Lo page is worse tho.. look under their "values" section..

Can somebody please provide a third option about the placing & size of the image Colesadelaide.jpg image please. DXRAW 12:44, 26 August 2006 (UTC) --Personally, I think it looks odd that small. Giorgos 14:02, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

500 Stores Nationwide

edit

Is that number on the page, of 500+ stores across Australia, inclusive or not of the stores that have changed from BI-LO's to Coles? --203.173.45.223 12:44, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, that number has actually been there since before the conversion plans were announced, I'd say the number needs an update. Jack Nelson 09:03, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

For the current time, Coles is using their current logo without the circle. I guess this is a transitional logo to fill in the gap between the old logo & the new logo. --Brayds2006 04:25, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tick Removed. - Boochan 10:24, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Don't go by what the ads do. Coles seem to be changing around every couple of weeks. Dollar Dazzlers for a 2 weeks, then gone again, new ad theme (that probably wont last long), 'Fresh' theme in store that'll probably be gone in the next fortnight. They're very unpredictable at the moment. Neoballmon II 12:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Unpredictable? You should try working for them! As a former store manager, it was nothing short of impossible to keep up to date with every single change in branding, management, governance or the like. 60.241.240.218 04:33, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Departmental minutiae

edit

This article suffers from the same fate as many similar retail entries with unnecessary reference to the inner workings of the store. How a supermarket internally organizes its departments is not notable or verifiable by third party sources. This detail I assume is provided by well-intentioned employees, but has no place in Wikipedia. To date, I have resisted deleting entire swathes of unremarkable info such as "the fresh produce department looks after fruit and vegetables" but suggest perhaps a more bold approach might be in order. Murtoa 12:50, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've now removed non-notable material in line with above , retaining any material potentially notable which may be points of difference. Murtoa 04:00, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Private Label

edit

The three split stubs for the private label brands are un-needed and the reference they have in the main Coles article is plenty. I propose to merge them (effectively deleting them since their content is already in the main article). --TheSeer (TalkˑContribs) 08:51, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Totally agree. Not in any sense notable topics on their own, and would probably be subject of speedy deletes otherwise. Murtoa 05:50, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pictures

edit

What is the reason for removing the pictures of the interior of the Coles store? It indicates what it looks like inside. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.148.216.22 (talk) 21:48, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Notable promotions?

edit

What is so notable about the notable promotions? In particular some promotion they ran between 1991 and 1993? Who cares? 59.167.48.200 (talk) 12:23, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The computers for schools promotion in 1991-93 was unique and did cause a deal of publicity at the time. Murtoa (talk) 22:28, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hardly a historically significant matter, all the same. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.48.200 (talk) 12:55, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Unless we can have some evidence that the promotion was significant in terms of impact (financial or otherwise), then I'd suggest we remove the old stuff and make the entry a little more objective e2mq173 (talk) 02:22, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

National Stores

edit

The page says 740+ Stores in Australia ,but a large number have recently been converted into Foodworks stores. I know a dozen in my state of SA were, and i think i remember reading about 60 over the whole country, which would take the total under 700? -- Neoballmon III (talk) 04:49, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

In March 2010, FoodWorks halted its takeover of 45 Coles stores due to financial worries. At that stage, 22 had been taken over nationwide.[1] Coles reported 763 supermarkets in last annual report [2] so 740+ still seems about right. Murtoa (talk) 03:01, 21 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Spoke too soon. Coles' 3rd quarter results state 690 stores (note: 51 Bi-Lo stores separate to this number)[3]Murtoa (talk) 00:26, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

"nothing over 2/6"

edit

Do others think that original slogan needs a translation for the post decimalisation generations? I do, and would suggest....

(pronounced "two and six", and meaning "two shillings and sixpence", or 25 cents)

Merge discussion on Coles Local

edit

Just a heads up that I have proposed that we merge Coles Local into this article. Discuss is here. - Chris.sherlock (talk) 08:27, 28 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Adding a "Controversies" section

edit

I feel that a "controversies" section should be added to this article, which could detail public debate regarding the company. Possible controversies could include accusations of price gouging and, more recently, giving employees Coles-branded water bottles as a substitute for a Christmas bonus (see the following news article: https://www.news.com.au/finance/work/at-work/shameful-slap-in-the-face-coles-slammed-for-gimmick-staff-christmas-gift-ahead-of-water-bottle-points/news-story/69660836fee8f9546946f30d1c2b8a4c). TheLeoLover6 (talk) 15:17, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Criticism recommends not doing this. HiLo48 (talk) 23:02, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I second that, although maybe the headline could be less spikey. Maybe "sticky issues'? As the current discussion rages about price gauging and the enormous profit figures are published. they are not set into context. Whether we see profiteering (my preferred term) or not can only be ascertained by looking at turnover vs profit. = 2001:8003:A070:7F00:68A0:CA73:9F76:771 (talk) 02:21, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
