Clean-up
editAn editor needs to take this in hand, I've tried but a lot more needs to be done. Saga City 22:14, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Someone (alas not me) has done a really blinding edit so I feel the tag is no longer necessary The Sanctuary Sparrow 15:27, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Please note the clean-ups I have now done. Too much of what was there was acceptable for spoken English and, indeed, read as if someone had dictated it. Also, for example, it is neither necessary nor helpful to link to the names of the days of the week unless they are of exceptional meanings to the article. Also Nelson was continually linked to as if earlier editors had never heard of the admiral, let alone the town in New Zealand. Saga City 16:59, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
It's looking really good now-I only took the tag off as I felt the issues in the article itself didn't merit the tag, needing only copyediting etc. I think it was put on earlier than NorthernPeak's edit which added a lot of detail, with only minor style problems. I'm usually wrong about these things though, being a relative n00b :) The Sanctuary Sparrow 08:03, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- I've tagged it again for {refimprove} and {expand}. Several sections - History is the worst offender - have insufficient citations at present. I've also reorganised it into sections per WP:UKCITIES; the following sections are currently lacking:
- Governance
- Geography
- Demography
- Religious sites
- Public services
- Notable people
- I wonder whether anyone feels inspired? (I also removed a lot of material that wan't about Colne itself, but about the surrounding area - particularly Nelson - and tried to tweak things so that the article is more comprehensible to an outsider. But lots still to do to lick this one into shape...) Crac4543 14:52, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Wallace Hartley
editHartley was born in Colne, however his family did move to another nearby town when he was about 5-ish. I wish I could recall the town he actually lived in. Someone from Colne, will know the exact town Hartley moved to. It was in 2001 since Ihave been there, my memory is shot.anyone? ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brattysoul (talk • contribs) 18:08, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- I've added a cite against his name in the article from here. As for where he might have moved to aged 5, you might like to try the 1881 and 1891 census for the area. He would have been 13 in 1891 so perhaps is still there. The Lancs Family History Society might be able to help: http://www.lfhhs.org.uk/ - as a person of note they might have something on him - give them an email or a bell. Good luck. Acabashi (talk)
Pronunciation
editIs it really pronounced /kɒln/ ("colln")? I always thought it was /koʊn/ ("cone"). -- Dr Greg talk 15:29, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
- What about Colne, Cambridgeshire and River Colne, Essex? I thought it was "cown". 86.175.158.99 (talk) 20:11, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
- We're simple folk at this end of the M65, just say what you see. There is definitely an l in it.--Trappedinburnley (talk) 22:02, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
- But is it a long "oh" or a short "o"? -- Dr Greg talk 00:36, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

- It's pronounced as it's written. Closer to /kɒln/ ....It has a 'hard c', a short 'o' sound, one 'l' and one 'n'. I pronounced it as the family born and bred there, that I stayed with, said it to me. By the way, I loved it there. The pastoral area was calming and lovely....giving me a true sense of comfort while I was there. As did the people who resided throughout Lancs. - I grew up just down the road in Nelson and went to school in Colne; I can confirm that it is indeed pronounced /kɒln/. BigDom (talk) 10:17, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
