To be perfectly honest I think the image in the article is pretty odd and hard to look at. Here is one of my eyes http://i.imgur.com/Uhja5p4.jpg (left eye of 34 year old woman with bilateral coloboma). I understand the need for reliable sources so maybe this is a call to ophthalmologists: get good pics of your patients and publish them in the literature! I have a daughter with this type of eye, hers is a lot larger then the picture you show and I was wondering if you would like a picture of it so that you could post it on here as well to show variety! Eyelid coloboma

I was interested in hearing from anyone who has an eye lid coloboma and has had an operation to fix it cosmetically?

In May 2007 an 3-year old English girl (Madeline) was (presumably) kidnapped whilst on holiday in Portugal - according to photo I saw of her at: http://nyhederne.tv2.dk/article.php/id-6949502.html?rss

Question: Does she suffer from Coloboma?

Yes, she does, and I have added some information to that effect. Also, I was thinking that this article could use a photograph of a coloboma. However, I'm thinking it would be bad taste to link to the photo of Madeleine, or even to direct attention to the photo there. On the other hand, I may be a bit overly sensitive. I have removed a Madeleine McCann photograph from the article (that was added anonymously), not primarily because of taste concerns, but because the image is copyrighted, has no fair use rationale for this article (only for the Madeleine McCann one), and does not satisfy point 1 of WP:FU in that a free alternative could reasonably be created or found. ~Matticus ^T_C 09:34, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

I honestly can't tell for sure from many of the pictures but It looks to me like it is in fact a sectorial heterochromia irides. It is often described as a 'fleck' and looks to be a differently pigmented spot on her iris (which is a sectorial heterochromia irides) rather than a hole through the Iris which is a coloboma. Madeleine McCann

The parents of Madeleine McCann are using her coloboma as a means to try and find their abducted daughter. Should this perhaps be added to the article? I have added it once, but it was removed. I would like a bit of discussion about this.Lilac Soul 12:07, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

The information about her coloboma is already prominently included in the article on her disappearance. It does not belong in a medical article. If that were the case, there would be endless additions to medical articles about every notable person who has a medical condition. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a news service or agency related to missing children. Leave it out. Ward3001 13:28, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I think I agree with you. Let's leave it out. However, my opinion is that if she is actually found on account of her coloboma, it would be an interesting piece of information, including from a medical viewpoint, that person identification through a coloboma has been performed in the past.Lilac Soul 13:33, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

While I agree the actual mention of the McCann case is inappropriate for this article, would it be possible to use the close-up of her eye as an illustration of what a coloboma looks like? Joylock 06:11, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

I disagree with not including a reference to Madeline McCann. The coloboma is an integral part of the parents' exhaustive campaign to raise awareness of her appearance, to the extent that they have created a logo specifically based around it. Given the enormous media coverage (rightly or wrongly) of her disappearance and the posters seen all over the world giving a close-up of the coloboma, I don't see how this can avoid being mentioned here just because it is a 'medical article'. Some other rare eye conditions like heterochromia even have separate articles listing well-known people who have them. I certainly don't agree with using the image of MMcC's eye without any recognition of its significance. Tilefish 15:33, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
