Which Curtiss Field?
editI am uncertain, but it may be there are several examples of airfields with the name Curtiss Field. This article pertains to the airfield that would become called Columbia Field. For example, citations say that Michel Field became Roosevelt Field and Curtiss Field, but on a map, Curtiss Field (the one we are talking about) is quite a distance away - so...really? But I am unsure. Hopefully this article will help sort it out. Bdushaw (talk) 00:43, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
Useful link
editColumbia Airfield A useful link for history and images. Most of these images are more than 70 years old, hence I assume they are public domain. The general website is devoted to historical airfields "abandoned and little-known airfields". While I have no doubt the text is accurate, it seems a formally less desirable citation. Lindbergh
editAccording to this article, Lindbergh first flew from San Diego to "Curtiss Field" before his New York to Paris flight. I think that is not the Curtiss Field of this article, but the short-lived one next to Mitchell/Roosevelt. Interestingly, however, the article mentions an effort by Columbia Aircraft to attempt the flight using a Wright-Bellanca WB-2. Not sure how this might specifically relate to Curtiss field. Image for article
editLooking into the issue, I see that all the nice, ancient images on the Abandoned & Little Known Airfields are not quite in the public domain yet. Apparently 1927 is the cut off year. The images on A&LKA date to 1929-1940 and have unknown provenance. I see attributions such as "(courtesy of Amy Bentley)", but that means nothing. In short, I've not been able to locate a suitable public domain image that could be used. Bdushaw (talk) 18:23, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Activating article
editWell, I've added about all that I had in mind for the article. Perhaps not perfect, but good enough for an article start. I am not sure how to move it over as an actual article and implement the redirects... @TartarTorte:? Help? :) Bdushaw (talk) 06:13, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
- This is some amazing work. I'll take care of moving to article space and setting up the Columbia Field (New York) redirect. Thank you @Bdushaw. This is phenomenal. TartarTorte 13:07, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
