Content of the Manuscript?
editWhat is the content of the Commentary on the Apocalypse manuscript? Aside from the inclusion of a map reflecting geographic knowledge of the time period, what does the manuscript say? What Apocalypse was the author referring to and when was it expected? Stevenmitchell (talk) 10:33, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- The maps, a version of the T and O maps(that has its own wikipedia entry), are not in every illustrated copy of the Beatus manuscripts, and are not necessarily connected to Beatus' commentary; that's why I deleted this reference to the maps. The problem is that Beatus' original commentary is not available to us. We know his commentary only through the extant copies of illustrated manuscripts known as the "Liébana Beatus," and there is ambiguity as to the relationship between Beatus' textual commentary and the extant copies of the illustrated manuscript. the latter have been the source of interest, as the illustrations are very beautiful, they appear in various entries of Wikipedia, and they are in the public domain. I added to this entry the influence on Picasso's Guernica and Léger's paintings, because it is through art history (not religious studies or the history of the Adoptionist controversy!) that these manuscripts have become famous.HarryBarks (talk) HarryBarks (talk) 16:55, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

Deleted text about Muslim persecution of Christians in Spain=
editI am removing the following text, not because I am judging its truth, but because it is unsourced. I cannot find anything this detailed about persecution of Christians in Spain. It looks like the Pact of Umar applied to Christians in the Iberian Peninsula. Again, no judgements but better documented statements are available.
- The deleted text: "After 711 AD, Spanish Christians found themselves being persecuted by Muslims.[citation needed] They could no longer practice their religion openly; bells and processions were forbidden; churches and monasteries were destroyed and were not reconstructed; persecutions often led to bloody outcomes.[citation needed]"Jacqke (talk) 21:53, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Jacqke, totally agree with you here. I know of no reliable source that documents a policy of bloody persecutions of Christians in Muslim Spain (Andalus). HarryBarks (talk) HarryBarks (talk) 14:05, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
