Australian stuff

There should probably be something about the ad campaign's recent introduction to and success in Australia following its launch on 3 February 2013, although as most of the details are very similar it would probably only require a by-note. This isn't really my area but [1] [2] were written pre-launch. I'd love to find some hard figures to put behind it, but no idea where to look for them. Orderinchaos 11:45, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Merge request

  • I've taken the time to merge the few parts of this which aren't in-universe to the parent article comparethemarket.com. Nothing outside of what currently makes up the "Advertising" and "Commercial success" portions of that article is notable. This was predictably undone with the rationale "One man's cruft is often another man's important relevant matter": well, no. The family tree of a fictional meerkat is not something that belongs in an encyclopedia, and was (as always in these cases) cited only to primary sources. I'll be undoing the revert shortly.   • It may be said that: something is encyclopedic if many people are likely to look in the encyclopedia for that information. Aleksandr Orlov has a large fan following. People are allowed to insert articles about Star Trek characters etc. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 22:24, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
    • I tend to agree a merge is a good idea - although perhaps an article about the entire meerkat campaign is more appropriate. Certainly the article, as named, isn't very tenable. --Errant (chat!) 22:33, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

It's been a week. Is there any further input to suggest that we need two articles here? As already stated, the merge has already been completed from the other end (comparethemarket.com has been expanded to include everything from this article that would make it notable), so all that's needed is to re-redirect it. I've changed my mind over this. The article here contains significantly more information than the proposed merge target (at this time). A lot of it is worth us recording. Taking that information there would probably unduely weight the argument with material about this campaign. I'd suggest a slight refocus of this article to discuss the campaign rather than (as it currently does) cover a fictional biography. --Errant (chat!) 12:25, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
It certainly contains more information, but all of it is fictional, and none of it has the slightest real-world impact (other than, tenuously, that various other members of Alexandr's "family" had toys produced of them for the campaign). comparethemarket.com is an insurance business. It meets any amount of commercial notability.
The meerkat advertising campaign, call it Aleksandr Orlov or Compare the Meerkat, whichever you prefer, is also a big topic with substantial notability. Yes, some ad campaigns, their slogans and their characters are notable and sourceable.
Crucially though, we can reasonably expect our readership to be entirely split as to which article they wish to read. Very few will want to read both (and for them we have links). This would be a bad merge. Andy Dingley (talk) 13:10, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
The merge has already taken place, insofar as that the other article now contains anything notable about the characters that this article contains. This is really a discussion about a redirect. But nevertheless, you're certainly right about the target audience. I'll stick a {{copied}} up on this so as to ensure attribution doesn't get mess up if ever this gets AfDed, though. This seems to warrant its own article on the basis of notability and not giving undue weight within comparethemarket.com. I expect students of marketing are already studying this campaign. -- Trevj (talk) 09:59, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
