It is also probably not true that they have a significantly larger receptive field than Simple Cells. Indeed the RF may be typically slightly larger, but probably inadequately so to suggest they have a large spatial invariance. They probably are just invariant over their relatively normally sized RF. It's reduced specificity to responding might be beneficial in producing robust responses to stimuli in spite of mild changes in stimulus presentation. (Shams et al 2002, Vision Research).
