Symproportionation → Comproportionation — More offical, more widely used, more correct etymologically. Physchim62 (talk) 13:00, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
To expand on the three reasons above:
- The IUPAC Gold Book lists both comproportionation and symproportionation as synonyms; however, comproportionation seems to be preferred, as you can see at the entry for disproportionation.
- Neither term is very widely used, but symproportionation gets 1,040 Google hits, while comproportionation gets 11,800.
- The term is the opposite of disproportionation (a much more widely used term). In Latin, the opposite of the prefix dis- is con-, with assimilation of the "n" to "m" before "p". The prefix syn- is the opposite of anti-.

- Also, syn - as Wiktionary now says - is Greek; its rare use in Latin or with Latin roots in English will jar on some readers unless there is a clear reason or habit supporting it. I see none here. Support. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 16:29, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
- Support, yep, Google scholar confirms com- as much more common.--Kotniski (talk) 08:54, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

This article should be called comproportionation, since that word gives about 7000 google hits, vs 700 for synproportionation. 209.151.140.80 (talk) 23:24, 9 June 2008 (UTC) |

Comproportionation reactions without sources or need checking
edit- The reaction of iodine with iodine trifluoride at −78 °C in CCl3F yield iodine fluoride:
- I2 + IF3 → 3 IF [1]
- The compound is produced by the reaction of silver and silver(I) fluoride:
- Ag + AgF → Ag2F [2]
- XeF4 + Xe → 2 XeF2 [3]
- Uranium trifluoride can be obtained by reacting uranium(IV) fluoride with aluminium at 900 °C or with uranium:
