Wow, that was BOLD!

Sorry for the lack of a better heading, but this is what I think about the move from Municipalities of Portugal to Concelho: Wow, that was BOLD! I totally disagree with this move because:

  1. Look at Category:Municipalities: there is not one single country where its municipalities are described under the native language term;
  2. In fact, look again at Category:Municipalities: all articles follow the title convention of "Municipalities of (country)", so as to standardize the category;
  3. A third, deeper look at Category:Municipalities: not a single of those article titles is a redirect to another title, so all the articles titled "Municipalities of (country)" are genuine
  4. Let's now turn to WP:Naming conventions: "Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature."
  5. Want more? "Names of Wikipedia articles should be optimized for readers over editors; and for a general audience over specialists."
  6. Still more: "Name your pages in English and place the native transliteration on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly used in English than the English form."
  7. If "Concelho" prevails over "Municipalities of Portugal", will the companion article also be moved to "List of Concelhos of Portugal"?

Enough with the numbers. I believe that "Municipality" is a common English word that correctly carries the meaning of "Concelho". I believe that you missed all the hints from Category:Municipalities because Municipalities of Portugal wasn't itself included in the category. As for the policies' oversight, yes, they're too many sometimes.

In conclusion, I totally support a redirect from "Concelho" to "Municipalities of Portugal", but not the other way round. Oh, and by the way, the same should be said of Freguesia and Parishes of Portugal (which doesn't exist as of my writing). If someone seconds me, we can go for a straw poll to move the article back to whence it came. --maf 14:27, 11 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm totally with you. It's plain stupid to use Concelho, since it is only used colloquially. Municipality (município) is the official form. You have the Câmara Municipal, not the Câmara Concelhia. Joaopais 01:08, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Oh my. The move has been reverted by its author, so now we're left here with a dubious disambiguation page that looks more like a dictionary entry, which WP asks specifically not to be. Still, I'm going to first sort out the mess at the article on the Municipalities of Macau before coming back to this article. --maf 10:41, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
