Etomology?

I was wondering why it's called concession stand in US English. It seems very strange. What's being conceded and by whom? 193.91.181.142 (talk) 20:30, 9 August 2012 (UTC) (Nick)

   I haven't yet checked to see whether article now explains this, but i believe it refers to the event's entrepeneur conceding (waiving) (in consideration of a concession fee, i think) a limited portion of their right to forbid buying and selling for profit during the event. The stand of course is the structure you set up on the footprint of the concession you have bought.

The "ever popular" use/mention error :-)

This article isn't about the term concession stand. This is an encyclopedia. Not a dictionary. It's like if the Wikipedia article about the earth started like this: "The earth is a five letter word." ;-)

A concession stand (American English), snack kiosk or snack bar (British English, Irish English) is the term used to refer to a place where...

I'm going to change the article introduction a little. Which by the way should also be done with a bunch of other Wikipedia articles.

   Good job. Your IP status made me anticipate that you might not grasp that identifying unintuitive terms and explaining their logic (see the "concession" question above) is encyclopedic, but you're on the money. Have you considered creating a WP account? That is, declaring a name and password (and probably choosing some of the optional settings to suit you, and putting out a request for an admin who knows how to give your account retroactive recognition for your existing "IP" edits). Thank you, Jerzy•t. I do certainly agree that explaining terms is pertinent and relevant and such. However, I think this could be better to put somewhat further down in an article. It's sort of like just one of several aspects of the topic, perhaps like the history aspect. Again, what I mean is just, the introduction or first sentence of an article should present the topic, that's not the place to present the name for the topic.
