Talk:Conservation and restoration of herbaria

Hi Danielle, I wanted to review your outline in particular because I think that you, Courtnye and I are all going to be covering some similar aspects. I think so far we've all approached things a little differently, and I thought I might share some of my own personal logic with these articles to see if you think it might be good for applying to yours as well. Essentially, we have the same information but worded and ordered differently. You might consider adding a history section, because at least in my case, insect collecting came with both amateur and professional origins. You might have planned to talk about the development of collecting specimens in your types of specimens section, but if you have a separate area just for history, it might keep your sections less full and easier to read in smaller bites. I'd also suggest thinking about moving your preventive conservation section up so that the flow of actions in conservation follows the order that would be taken since you would first try to secure the environment and avoid deterioration before you would physically repair damages. I'll let you know if I come across some good resources for you as I'm looking for my own. Annavlaminck (talk) 18:36, 2 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Danielle, I don't know much about science collections, so I was curious to see your outline. I noticed your comment about Herbaria (I looked it up to make sure I knew what it meant!), and it does seem like "botanical specimens" covers quite a lot, so maybe it makes sense to narrow it down. In general, your outline seems to have the same components as other articles. I agree with Anna's comment above that it might be good to add something about the history of the practice. I imagine it has evolved, and probably has quite a long history? --NicoleStribs (talk) 01:22, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Luca Ghini is usually credited with being the first person to prepare herbarium specimens. His name might be a useful search term to locate other sources that discuss the history of herbaria. Plantdrew (talk) 21:41, 16 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
