Bomber

Came here while reading about the Battle of Midway to find information about use as a torpedo bomber... it does say that torpedo racks were available, but gives no reference at all to "bomber" being one of the intended roles, or deployed roles, other than in the context of being used to lay mines. According to Battle of Midway a PBY Catalina scored the only US air-launched torpedo hit of the engagement; also the first damaging strike of the engagement. So there is clearly important operational history in this role. Also, the PBY designation shows it was intended as a bomber.76.105.216.34 (talk) 05:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

wass assessed as A-class, but hasn't been through a review, so...B-class it is. - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 04:47, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Consolidated PBY Catalina

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Consolidated PBY Catalina's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Klemen":

  • From Japanese invasion of Malaya: Bert Kossen; Pierre-Emmanuel Bernaudin; Dr. Leo Niehorster; Akira Takizawa; Sean Carr; Jim Broshot; Nowfel Leulliot; Klemen L (1999–2000). "Seventy minutes before Pearl Harbor – The landing at Kota Bharu, Malaya, on December 7, 1941". Forgotten Campaign: The Dutch East Indies Campaign 1941–1942.
  • From Easter Sunday Raid: Klemen, L. "Vice-Admiral Chuichi Nagumo". Forgotten Campaign: The Dutch East Indies Campaign 1941–1942.
  • From United States Asiatic Fleet: L, Klemen (1999–2000). "Rear-Admiral Karel W.F.M. Doorman". Forgotten Campaign: The Dutch East Indies Campaign 1941-1942.
  • From Balikpapan: L, Klemen (1999–2000). "The capture of Balikpapan, January 1942". Forgotten Campaign: The Dutch East Indies Campaign 1941–1942.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 15:59, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

What material was it constructed from?

What material were PBY's constructed from? Was it all-metal (aluminum), or was any wood/fabric used? BMJ-pdx (talk) 04:00, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

I may have a reference on this, have to do some digging. - Ahunt (talk) 15:28, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
According to http://catalinaflying.org.au/catalina.htm it was all-metal apart from the "ailerons and trailing edges are fabric-skinned". MilborneOne (talk) 18:10, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
Super, thanks!   Done. - Ahunt (talk) 23:45, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Bob Hope, USO, and PBYs

I recall from a documentary on Bob Hope that a lot of his South Pacific island-hopping for the USO was done in PBYs. (A brave man, contrary to his screen persona.) If that can be verified (I'm working on it), that USO role of PBYs should probably be added to the "Roles in World War II" section. BMJ-pdx (talk) 04:35, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Sure, with a ref that could be a useful addition. - Ahunt (talk) 15:28, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Catalina plane which crashed on the Hebridean island of Vatersay in May 1940

FYI, there’s a picture of a Catalina on the BBC: Life on the 82 other Great British islands, 28 June 2018. JDAWiseman (talk) 08:29, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Civilian use and Role in Pearl Harbor

Should their also be details of those PBYs used by civilians or in Pearl Harbor, since there are articles about both?184.186.4.209 (talk) 00:46, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Sure, if it is significant and there are reliable sources to support the proposed text. - Ahunt (talk) 01:48, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Power/Weight typo

Empty weight: 20,910 lb (9,485 kg)
Max. takeoff weight: 35,420 lb (16,066 kg)
 Powerplant: 2 × ... 1,200 hp (895 kW) each
 Power/mass: 0.034 hp/lb (0.056 kW/kg)

Two 1,200HP engines is 2,400HP. Divided by 35,000 pound max weight is a number like 0.068, not 0.034.

I get these numbers:

Power/mass: 0.11 hp/lb (0.19 kW/kg) empty
Power/mass: 0.068 hp/lb (0.11 kW/kg) max takeoff
