Note on translation of the army's name

edit

English language sources seem to disagree on how to translate the army's name, from the traditional Chinese characters 援閩粵軍 (Yuanmin yuejun). Chen 1999, p. 75 initially translates it as the "Guangdong Army to assist Fujian", but uses the contracted form of "Guangdong Army" throughout the rest of the book. Goikhman 2013 likewise refers to it by the simpler contracted form "Guangdong Army". In contrast, Guo 2020 introduces it with the translation "Aid-Fujian Cantonese Army", but later mentions that it was commonly referred to by the simpler contracted form of "Cantonese Army". My instinct is that we should use the simpler contracted form "Guangdong Army" throughout the article as its common name, although we could introduce it by its longer form. @Ashikaga Takauji: Thoughts on this? --Grnrchst (talk) 10:30, 11 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Guangdong Army to assist Fujian is not the only Guangdong army unit, so you cannot use an abbreviation to refer to it. Ashikaga Takauji (talk) 14:06, 11 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
