GA comments
edit- There should be a usual weight and length in some section.
- It would be nice with a taxonomy section describing when it was described and by who, but do not think that would be a GA requirement.

Action taken
editAdded information re: when it was described, by whom and added links to the articles on the collectors. I have also added some information on lengths. MidgleyDJ 21:39, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Reproduction Info
editI have some convicts raising fry at the moment. I've added some pics to give an idea of the reproduction stages and timeline.
I've also changed the top pic to show a male and female. It's not a bad pic as it shows the main distingusing features (colour in famale and bump in male). Deanpemberton —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deanpemberton (talk • contribs) 01:58, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
These are some really good pictures of the eggs and fry, mine never turn out that clear.128.210.142.38 (talk) 22:45, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Genus Name
editIs the genus name now Cryptoheros? I thought the convict cichlid and some others had been moved out of Archocentrus.Rlendog (talk)
In the Aquarium
edit"They get along with big fish such as oscars, to which they can be extremely aggressive." In other words.. "Convicts often manage to bully larger fish in to submission through persistence rather than through sheer size and relative strength."
I feel my contribution clarifies the previous sentence. It would have helped me before I added a small Convict which terrorised 4 Parrots 2x its size and a Firemouth 3x its size. Convicts back off and then rush in back to the fight to attack again when the other fish has relaxed from a defensive/aggressive stance. The convict repeatedly hurt the Parrot fish that way.

- Hi Lsuacner - Thanks for your contributions, but articles should have referenced material being added to them. Adding your own personal experiences is a kind of original research which is not publishable at Wikipedia. Hope this helps, MidgleyDJ (talk) 09:27, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Please take it upon yourself to reference: "They get along with big fish such as oscars, to which they can be extremely aggressive". It is commonly known and therefore not questioned, I expanded on the original unreferenced material only to clarify the statement already included in the current version. I prefer a concise article, even if additions only clarify unreferenced commonly known material. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lsuacner (talk • contribs) 12:07, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Lsuacner -- I've removed the unreferenced and poorly worded sentence you pointed out. Thanks. Being "commonly known" isnt enough for material to be included in articles at Wikipedia. It may be worth looking over the guidelines for WP:V. Hope this helps you, MidgleyDJ (talk) 00:27, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
The average life span in an aquarium should probably be included in the article.4.239.105.137 (talk) 00:42, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
I have a tank with convicts & a Malawi tank. Coincidently both tanks have fry. The convict fry are 4 days free swimming & malawis are 3 days. Can I put both fry together in a small tank? Thanks Mypike (talk) 13:01, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
Additions
editI am a student of Washington University in St. Louis, and in my study of behavioral ecology I added the sections under "Reproduction" to this page: Mating System, Sexual Selection, Parental Roles, and Brood Adoption. I also added the "Aggressive Behavior section." Lucialemon (talk) 07:32, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

I am reviewing this article for GA Sweeps. This article is well-referenced and the only problem is a weak lead section. But given that the article is not long and the lead section has covered the major points of the article, I decide that this article remains as GA. OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:32, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Peer Review
editThe new sections about reproduction and aggressive behavior were excellent additions to this article. Under the section, “Mating System,” I don't believe it was necessary to repeat that convict cichlids are monogamous; the author had already stated that under “Life Cycle.” I would recommend changing that. I made a few minor grammatical edits and changed some sentence structure for the two paragraphs under “Parental Roles.” I removed an unnecessary comma under “Brood Adoption.” The content of this article was excellent; the author did not overemphasize results or methods of experiments, and the language used was precise and technical.

- Grammar errors corrected and sentence structures improved.
Suggestions:
- Reproduction section seems to cover broader range of topics. Change the heading?
- Life cycle subsection is lengthy, so I would suggest dividing the section into three parts with subheadings: Birth, Early development, and Maturation. Currently the order is Maturation (first paragraph), Birth (second paragraph), and Early development (third and fourth paragraph), but I think birth->early development->maturation might be a better order for this section.
- Some contents in Life cycle section and Parental roles section are redundant.
- In the Sexual selection subsection, I would suggest switching the first and second paragraph, because it seems to me that the second paragraph is more important.
- In Mating System section, briefly explain what substrate-brooding means.
Good job overall! Allasse0927 (talk) 06:46, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

editThe life cycle section is a little long. If you could break this up with smaller subheadings that would be helpful. You should try to be consistent in how you refer to the organism. Either choose common or scientific name and choose if you will abbreviate it or not (I would just refer to it as the convict cichlid and not just cichlid because this is more specific). Maybe you can elaborate about what changes in the roles through the brood cycle. I made a few grammatical changes and added wikilinks. Overall I thought this was a well executed article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Batoburen (talk • contribs) 02:03, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Final Peer Review
editLooks like this article already has Good Article status! However, I do think there are some things you can improve upon in order to try and reach featured article status. Firstly, the lead section (the part before the outline of the article) is very short and should be expanded upon. The way I understand it, it just summarises the major points of the article, so it should touch on the main things you will talk about and doesn't need to have references, as everything in the lead section should be present later on in the article anyway. Also, you have some faulty hyperlinks which should either be deleted or fixed (re: the words in red). The feeding section is also quite short, so I think it would be beneficial to expand upon that. Also, you define 'brood' after hyperlinking it, which is unneccesary. I would delete your definition in parentheses and instead just leave the hyperlink. Also, you don't have many hyperlinks in the 'Reproduction' section except for the first sub-section; I think it would help readers to hyperlink 'difficult' words in these sections (i.e. mouth-brooding, serially monogamous, etc.). All in all, this is a well-written and comprehensive article, I just think that you should fix these small things in order to get up to Featured Article status.
