I've recently visited Coombe Hill and was talked to by a National Trust member who was caring for the site. According to the Wikipedia entry, Coombe was given to the Goverment first then passed onto the National Trust. But the N.A. member told me it was given straight to the National Trust.
I would just like to know which is true.
Thank you,
Ms. A. Smith
i have also recently been to coombe hill and a nationltrust man gave me a lecture on coombe hill. he also said that coombe hill was given to the goverment first and then given to the N.A. i have seen a writer say that they were not sure which on was true, either given straight to N.A or given to the goverment first. So i think that Wikipedia are right and that it was given to the goverment first. thanks
Thank you very much for setting that straight.
Mrs. A. Smith
I can remember staying in Dunsmore with my Gran when I had school holidays circa 1950's.
I was always told that Coombe Hill was given by the Prime Minister to the people of England !
Are there still squirrels running around in the woods?
Ah! such happy memories.

Yes, there are still squirrels running around in the woods. Apart from that, I changed the article slightly - it stated that the original plaque was gold, but in fact the current stone plaque says that the original *bronze* plaque was stolen.

claimed view of salisbury plain
editI am deleting the unsourced claim that the Monument, or Hill, can be seen from Salisbury Plain (or vice versa).
I believe that the view is blocked by the Lambourn and Berkshire Downs, also Walbury Hill. I have also checked Jonathan di Ferranti's panorama http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/panoramas/ENGP/COOMBE%20HILL.png and used www.peakfinder.org neither of which provide any evidence for such a sight (even when using the above ground height with peakfinder). I also checked past history: Revision as of 20:13, 30 April 2011 (edit) 78.149.175.146 discusses generated views but does not mention Salisbury Plain
